摘要:
An automated, drug-risk-management computer program is presented. This program was designed to be run on the SpaceLabs PC monitor equipped with the PC mode option. This option enables the user to execute programs on the monitor as if it were a standard personal computer. Drug dosages, rates, and bag sizes can be entered; the program converts these data into volumetric units (ml and ml/hr). The data are then used to automatically set the infusion pumps. Every four minutes, all current pump data are stored in a disk file. The program displays typical dosages, indications, and side-effects for fourteen commonly used drugs. Having this program available at each bedside would relieve the clinician of arduous hand calculations and may avoid the possibility of pump setting errors. This program can manage up to sixteen infusion pumps but with additional hardware and software modifications, over sixty-four pumps could be managed. The system has been completed and clinical trials are planned.

BMETs and clinical engineers must be aware of the biological hazards they face in the hospital so they can take precautions to avoid work-related illnesses. A need for educational material on the subject prompted this series of papers examining various biohazards. This paper, the last in the series, reviews a variety of common diseases of the skin and urogenital systems. Common pathogens, their routes of transmission, isolation precautions, and infection control techniques are discussed. The precautions cited are not intended to constitute a full infection control program. Persons interested in further information are advised to contact the infection control officer at their facility, or the Centers for Disease Control.

摘要:
This paper presents two general designs for true constant-current stimulators suitable for biomedical applications. Both designs utilize the LM334 3-terminal, adjustable current source. One design applies to pulsed-mode applications and permits the use of monophasic or biphasic pulses with independent adjustment of pulse amplitude, duration, and separation. The second design incorporates an optical isolator so that constant-current analog stimulation may be achieved. These circuits will drive resistive loads characteristic of biological systems.

The purpose of this paper is to describe current clinical engineering (CE) activities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The CE directors of the thirteen largest hospitals in this area were interviewed by telephone and questions were asked regarding CE environment, activities, and management. Data are presented on the numbers and types of personnel, the educational background of the CE department directors, the position of the CE department in the management hierarchy, department activities, and management programs. Hospitals ranged in bed count from 380 to 1,509 with 1 to 26 employees. Four of 13 departments operate as profit centers. Departments range from one to four reporting levels below the hospital chief executive officer. Almost every CE department is involved in risk management, but only half measure worker productivity.
