摘要:
In an institution with a large patient population and a campus covering many large buildings and several acres, access to unoccupied electric beds for electric safety testing was difficult. This situation resulted in poor compliance with safety inspection schedules. To solve the problem, a device was constructed which measures current leakage using an isolated ac line and an isolated ground. This permits leakage testing of a grounded bed without creating potentially hazardous currents. Since the patient is protected, electrical safety testing can be performed on occupied beds, increasing efficiency and eliminating both logistical and safety inspection compliance problems.

摘要:
This paper describes a simple electronic stethoscope that may be used in the operating room for monitoring heart and respiratory sounds. The circuit described is an audio amplifier that provides short-circuit-proof output, is compact, and avoids the constraints of conventional stethoscopes. The necessary components can be easily obtained from most electronic supply houses. Construction of this device can be a practical project in an educational program for anesthesia residents.

摘要:
The New England Medical Center can be traced back to 1796 when the Boston Dispensary opened the first HMO. Now, the center complex covers four city blocks, offers 47 medical residency programs, has over $20 million in funded research, and includes a medical school, dental school, and the Human Nutrition Research Center. The Medical Engineering Department began in 1971 as a joint venture between the center and Tufts University. Operated on a “fee-for-service” basis, the department consists of nine people in medical engineering and an additional four in radiology engineering. The department performs quality assurance and preventive maintenance work, along with as-needed repairs, throughout the center on an equipment roster that includes over 1,200 computer terminals and printers, 58 intensive care beds, and 200+ I.V. pumps. Specialized equipment allows the department to perform audiology repairs. Future goals include integrating the radiology repair staff into the medical engineering group, improving the group's productivity, and eliminating some of the existing service contracts.

摘要:
Transducers used in body support interface pressure evaluation are inconsistent and the measurement technology is poorly defined. To study the measurement and performance characteristics of interface pressure evaluating systems, calibration experiments and clinical trials were carried out with pneumatic and electropneumatic pressure transducers. The objective of the experiments was to establish the boundaries of agreement among the common pressure evaluating systems using a practical measurement protocol. Reproducible static spot, plane and curved surface calibration loads were applied to each of the transducers. Twenty normal volunteers were measured in the sitting and recumbent positions by four independent observers in two clinical laboratories. None of the transducers was found to reproduce the applied peak pressures in the calibrating modes of these experiments. When the transducers were used by skilled observers, the results showed highly significant strong correlation between the outputs of the transducers (SD < 15 mmHg) for 1,080 independent pressure measurements in the range of 20 to 100 mmHg.
