摘要:
Results of a previously reported survey of BMETs and CEs indicated a need for further education of these professionals concerning work-related biohazards. In this third article of a five-part series, the dangers of disease transmission by blood and other body fluids are discussed. Susceptibility factors are cited to indicate those persons at greatest risk of infection, and recommendations are provided to assist BMETs and CEs in effectively protecting both themselves and other clinical and nonclinical personnel from infection. The recommendations presented include suggested disinfection procedures for contaminated equipment. Persons interested in further information are advised to contact the infection control officer at their facility, or the Centers for Disease Control.

摘要:
An AC power-quality survey was conducted at four hospitals of differing bed sizes in the Midwest. This power-line survey concentrated on determining the ac power quality in three areas: ICU/CCU, radiology, and the clinical chemistry lab. A summary of three months of monitoring indicates very stable RMS voltage levels but the presence of substantial voltage impulses or electrical noise. The substantial ac line voltage impulses observed may be of concern to both medical equipment users and designers.

摘要:
A computer program was written to improve quality control and risk management of patients on ventilators. The software was designed to run on the new-generation Spacelabs PC Monitor interfaced to the Puritan-Bennett 7200a ventilator. Before the program allows connection of the ventilator to a patient, the ventilator is polled for initial hardware status, alarm statuses and alarm limit settings. If there are no hardware failures, alarm violations, or improperly set alarm limits, the program prompts the clinician to connect the ventilator to the patient. Polling is done periodically after patient ventilation begins, and patient data, alarm conditions, or changes to the ventilator settings are automatically written to disk. In addition, real-time data can be displayed at any time during the ventilation session by using a set of touch-screen options. After the ventilation session is complete, the clinician can print the final report in hard copy or to disk.

摘要:
A new generation of cardiac pacemakers can adaptively increase pacing rate by using a biophysical sensor to measure a physiological quantity which is related to the need for increased heart rate. The increased heart rate has proven beneficial to patients during periods of metabolic stress and is demonstrated by increased exercise tolerance, higher cardiac output and a greater sense of well-being. In practice, rate adaption requires an appropriate biophysical parameter, a reliable implantable sensor, and a suitable algorithm to determine pacing rate on the basis of the sensed parameter. Some biophysical quantities are more physiologic, such as blood temperature, respiration, ventricular pressures, and stroke volume; others are less physiologic, such as body vibration. Laboratory and clinical studies were reviewed to provide this overview of current trends.Though the practical implementation of these pacemakers is still limited by the availability of implantable sensors with proven reliability, rate-adaptive pacemakers represent a significant advancement in medical technology.

摘要:
This paper describes the fabrication and use of a device that aids the rehabilitation of patients suffering from unilateral neglect following a cerebral vascular accident. The device, which is used in a training program at the Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre (Owen Sound, Ontario), is simple to construct and operate. It comprises an infrared transmitter, an infrared receiver, and an electronic timer. Use of the device is thought to have contributed to increased levels of awareness in three patients aged 62 to 74.
