摘要:
The spatfall patterns of the oyster,Crassostrea cucullata(Born 1778) and the barnacle,Balanus amphitrite(Darwin 1854) on cemented coconut shells were studied in relation to shore levels and monsoon seasons in East Africa. Both oysters and barnacles settled most frequently above the Mean Tide Level (MTL). About 75.6% of the oyster and 96.9% of the barnacles occurred above the MTL. Thus below MTL, the oyster spat had a better niche advantage over the barnacles. However, at the latter levels the oysters faced heavy competition from fouling organisms, which were mostly spirobids, serpulids, bryozoans, hydrozoans and sponges. The spat of both oysters and barnacles showed seasonality in their settlement. About 93.1% of the total oyster spat settlement occurred in the South East Monsoon (SEM) and the number of spat at peak settlement was 12.6 times the total spat settlement in the North East Monsoon (NEM). As regards the barnacles, 86.4% of the total barnacle spat settlement occurred in SEM and the number of spat in the peak settlement was 3.4 times the total settlement in NEM. Oysters and barnacles on the cemented coconut shells had a wider vertical distributional range than those found on mangrove trees.

摘要:
The Cicadellidae comprise a large assemblage of poorly defined subfamilies with uncertain relationships. In attempting to place a new leafhopper genus(Tinteromus) from Costa Rica, in an existing subfamily, we used a phenetic analysis involving several similar groups. Table 2 shows the similarity values between these groups and the new taxa. Results suggest that the new genus is not closely related to any known subfamily and a new subfamily Tinterominae, is proposed. Descriptions are given for the above new taxa and for two new species:T. omaniandT. nigricornis.

摘要:
The relative size of the encephalon and its parts were studied in samples of the eyed catfish,Pimelodella transitoria(Ribeiro 1912), and of two populations of the troglobiticP. kronei(Ribeiro 1907), from a karstic area in Southeastern Brazil. The size of the olfactory organ and number of olfactory lamellae were also compared. General structure of the brain and olfactory organ were similar to that of other catfish that have been studied and probably correspond to a “Siluriform pattern”.

摘要:
A new subspecies of theTropidurus spinulosusgroup is recognized and described asTropidurus spinulosus guarani. Its distribution area corresponds to the wet mesic region from central Paraguayan districts east of Asuncion and Paraguay River. Morphological characters and peculiar features of the new taxon are analysed and discussed in comparison with COPE'S nominal form. Populations ofTropidurus spinulosus spinulosusfrom the xerophytic Chacoan region of Argentina were used. Morphological differences between the uniform arboreal populations from northern and central Chacoan flats and the southernmost saxicolous populations from the Córdoba embossments are also reported and discussed.

摘要:
Four new species ofAutaliaLeach 1819 are described, two from Costa Rica (monteverdensisandbierigt), one from Mexico (yoopaa), one from Brazil (chapada), and illustrations of diagnostic features are provided. New distributional data is given forA. phricotrichosaHoebeke 1988 (from Guatemala), originally described from Chiapas, Mexico. A unique morphological character of sternum VII (of both sexes), a supposed synapomorphy for the knownAutaliaspecies of Mexico and tropical America, is described and discussed. A preliminary key to the Neotropical species is given.

摘要:
Three species of nitidulid beetles from Ecuador and Costa Rica are described as new:Pocadius maquipucunensis, P. ephite, andP. ephiteandP. jelineki. These species were collected from puffball fungi of the genusLycoperdonor in flight-intercept traps located in high-altitude cloud forests.Pocadius dimidiatusJelínek 1977, previously known from Argentina, is reported from Tambopata Province, Peru. Specimens ofP. dimidiatuswere collected from fungi in the generaLycoperdonandGeasteror in flight-intercept traps located in lowland tropical rainforest.

摘要:
The status of the writhing skinks of theLygosoma sundevalliigroup in the East Mrican Coastal Mosaic is investigated and a new species,L. mafianum, described from Mafia and Kisuju Islands off the Tanzanian coast. The most primitive species isL. lanceolatumBroadley 1990 of the Bazaruto Archipelago, which retains pterygoid teeth, a discrete supranasal, tricarinate dorsal scales in juveniles, four supralabials anterior to the subocular, lanceolate ear lobules and numerous subdigitallamellae.L. afrum(Peters 1854) of Zanzibar Island and the mainland is the only other species which may retain pterygoid teeth and usually a discrete supranasal. It has smooth dorsals, only three supralabials anterior to subocular, no ear lobules and much shorter digits thanL. lancelolatum. L. mafianumis primitive in retaining keeled dorsal scales throughout life, but lacks pterygoid teeth and has the supranasal fused with the anterior part of the nasal.L. pembanumBoettger 1913 is the most evolved species, having smooth scales throughout life, prefrontals fused with the frontonasal and the lowest number of subdigital lamellae.
