摘要:
Descriptions are provided of chromosomal sets and comparative analyses of C-banded chromosomes of the spiny mice from the genusAcomysGeoffroy 1838, which were collected from five localities in Ethiopia (Gamo-Gofa province: Konso area, Arba Minch; upper part of Awash valley: Koka area; middle part of Awash valley: Awash National Park and 70 km North from Awash National Park). Two karyotypic forms were discovered: one, as expectedA. cahirinusDesmarest 1819 (2n= 36, NF = 68) and one new for the Ethiopian fauna 68-chromosomalAcomyssp. The distribution of these forms is discussed. Details of the C-banded chromosomes ofAcomys cahirinusandAcomyssp. are given for the first time. It was shown that both these karyotypes possess mainly pericentromeric heterochromatin and have insignificant differences in their quantities. It is possible that heterochromatin variations did not make a contribution to the karyotypic evolution ofAcomys.Apparently, chromosomal evolution in this genus was determined by Robertsonian or tandemic type translocations.

摘要:
The potential locomotor performances of four Saharan species of rodents were tested in laboratory conditions, using three experimental situations. Two questions were investigated: Is each of these species able to use the vertical dimension when it is available? Does each of these species behave efficiently in a new environment? We tested the performances ofAcomys cahirinus(Desmarest 1819) andGerbillus campestris(Le Vaillant 1867) that are found in rocky environments in the wild and ofGerbillus pyramidum(I. Geoffroy 1825) andMeriones shaivi(Rozet 1833), that are found in sandy environments. Climbing performance of the species was tested on a horizontal platform, a thread and a tree-branch. From our data, we concluded thatAcomysandG. campestrisshowed an efficient behaviour in these three tasks.M. shawiand to a lesser extent G.pyramidumwere unable to behave efficiently in the test situations.

摘要:
The dung burial ability of two congeneric ball-rolling dung beetles,Allogymnopleurus thalassinusKlug 1855 andAllogymnopleurus consociusPeringuey 1900 was investigated in field experiments in three different textural classes of soil at contrasting moisture levels in order to seek an explanation for their strong associations with particular soil types in the field. The success and depth of burial of dung balls was measured and was strongly associated with soil hardness. Both species were unable to bury dung in soil with a hardness greater than 2 kg/cm2. Beetles were able to utilise both sand and clay soils for dung burial sites provided the soil was soft. Hard-setting sandy clay soils exceeded the hardness threshold except during brief periods following rain but the deep sand and self-mulching clay soils did not exceed this threshold even when dry. The restriction ot each species to soft soils of a particular texture is discussed.

摘要:
Eimeria scinciPhisalix 1923, is redescribed from the gall bladder of six of 20 (30%) specimens of the sandfish lizard,Scincus mitranusAnderson 1871 from Zulfi in the central region of Saudi Arabia. This report represents a new host and geographic record for the parasite. Oocyst measurements were similar to those reported previously fromScincus officinalisLaurenti 1768 in Tunisia. Except for our observation of a subspherical, compact sporocyst residuum, the oocyst morphology was identical to the original description ofE. scinci.Comparisons are made with species ofEimeriaSchneider 1875 from Scincidae.

摘要:
Merguia oligodon(De Man 1888), is one of the two known species of semi-terrestrial shrimp. It is very common in some Kenyan mangroves, where it can be found among the aerial roots ofRhizophora mucronata.Active only at night,M. oligodoncan be seen climbing spontaneously up the mangrove roots and trunks up to 80 cm above ground level. At high water, the shrimps always stay in the vicinity of the trunks and roots; even in this phase some individuals still prefer to remain out of the water and graze on the mangrove bark.

摘要:
Hyphydrus danin. sp. is described from the highlands of West New Guinea. This species is probably the sister species ofH. elegans(Montrouzier 1860). In addition, collecting notes onH. daniandH. lyratusSwartz 1808 are provided. The latter is reported from Bali, Lombok, Flores and Ceram for the first time, and the Balinese locality represents the first report of the species from paddy field waters. Faunistic data onH. decemmaculatusWehncke 1877 andH. elegansas well as notes on the type material ofH. curvipesRégimbart 1892 and ofH. gibbicollisRégimbart 1892 are reported.

摘要:
The larval feeding behaviour ofGraphipterus senator(Forskål 1775) has been investigated, using field and laboratory observations, by one of the authors. In this paper the larval morphology is described and the correlation of the very unique features of the three larval stages with the myrmecophilous life style is pointed out. The presence of channeled mandibles in the first and second instar suggests liquid feeding, previously unknown for carabid beetles. The body shape, triunguline-like in the first instar, physogastric with anchorage tubercles in the others, indicates different ways of life during larval developement. The sensorial set is remarkable because it is reinforced and strongly specialized, especially in the first instar. On the basis of the larval morphology a phylogenetic relationship with the tribe Peleciini is hypothesized.

摘要:
This work represents an analysis of the taxonomy, ecology, distribution and Zoogeographie affinities of the 87 species of snakes currently recorded from Ethiopia, including five which are here reported for the first time [Dromophis lineatus(Duméril & Bibron 1854),Grayia tholloniMocquard 1897,Philothamnus bequaerti(Schmidt 1923), P.hetero lepido tus(Günther 1863) andCausus maculatus(Hallowell 1842)]. Nine species (10.3% of the total) appear to be endemic[Rhinotyphlops erythraeus(Scortecci 1928),R. somalicusBoulenger 1895),Coluber somalicus(Boulenger 1896),Lamprophis abyssinicusMocquard 1906,L. erlangeri(Sternfeld 1908),Pseudoboodon boehmeiRasmussen & Largen 1992,P. gascaePeracca 1897,P. lemniscatus(Duméril & Bibron 1854) andBitis parvioculaBöhme 1977], but of these onlyP. lemniscatusis conspicuously montane, reaching an upper altitudinal limit at about 3300 m. Most Ethiopian snake taxa are found in the altitudinal range 500–1000 m and the ophidian fauna is dominated by savanna species (57.4% of the total) and deserticolous forms (24.2%); montane and forest species, apart from those categorised as endemic, are not well represented. No Ethiopian snake is at present known to be so rare or restricted in range that special provisions for its conservation appear to be justified.
