AbstractThe paper surveys briefly the literature on the shape of the sales‐advertising response relationship. Knowledge of this relationship is an important requirement for optimal marketing decisions. The role of theory is to specify the structure of models for testing. The paper presents a plausible model of this relationship based upon the consumer's response to advertising when qualitative uncertainty exists in a market. AbstractThis paper explores an alternative method of ‘solving’ the problem of recurring time variable demands in a public utility context. It views the utility's load curve as a series of horizontal layers or ‘slices’ of varying lengths, rather than as a series of vertical slices as in the traditional approach. AbstractThe article contains results of a quantitative empirical investigation into the effects of labour market segmentation on wage dynamics in total industry as well as in several industrial branches in West Germany. By testing correlations between several indicators of earnings and the labour market it is shown that wage dynamics, in so far as they are determined by shop floor bargaining, can be explained at least as well and partly even better by indicators of certain partial labour markets than by conditions of the general labor market (i.e. the traditional Philipps approach).

AbstractProduct liability has been the subject of increasing interest in many countries of the world over the last few years. There has been a developing public view that the manufacturers of all kinds of products should take greater responsibility for them. The product liability problems which can arise from the use of medicines by man have received particular attention; the special features of such products giving rise to misunderstandings. The paper views the present position from the point of view of the pharmaceutical industry in the UK. Recent developmends arising in Europe and elsewhere are described.

AbstractThe paper discusses long‐term managerial cost pricing, thus taking into account both operating and capital costs of new plant. AbstractIn most western countries the cost of health care occupies an increasing share of the available resources in the economy. By analysing the pharmaceutical technology, which is one of the technologies in the health care system, it is demonstrated that this development cannot totally or partially be referred to the cost of medicine. On the contrary, medicine occupies a decreasing share of the total health care cost in most countries. It is shown that in the past the use of medicine has considerably reduced the loss in society by reducing the human sufferings and the economic implications of lost working days. But also today real and potential savings exist. By using Swedish findings in the areas of rheumatic illnesses and gastric ulcers it occurs that large savings can be obtained by reducing the losses due to lost working days. The author calls for a more positive understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and the conditions in which it operates. To achieve this the industry itself must be more open minded.

AbstractThis paper examines the nature of the objective function of the firm when operating under conditions of uncertainty. Robustness is presented as a purposeful maximand for decision making both under conditions of certainty and uncertainty ‐ a robust decision being one in which the decision maker retains the maximum flexibility with regard to future decisions after an initial decision has been made.
