This sensory test is a powerful tool for process control and can be used for routine testing and early warning. If a potential problem is detected or jar testing is needed to determine treatment changes, the reliable, yet more complex tests, such as TON and FPA, should be used. If a geosmin episode occurs, use an FPA panel to monitor the odor intensity of the earthy odor. It is vital to focus the limited energies of operators and process scientists on the changes in taste and odor quality. Once changes are flagged – hopefully taking only a small percentage of the overall time spent in testing water–then more detailed tests or actions can be pursued.

摘要:
Water treatment chemicals are subject to increasingly restrictive operational requirements. These restrictions are due to public concern about the potentially harmful environmental, public, and worker safety effects involved in the accidental release of toxic or explosive vapor clouds. The result of these regulations is a tangled, overlapping mosaic of programs and agencies. The authors suggest that a Risk Management Program model should be developed to reduce implementation costs and lighten the regulatory load of many systems.

Our citywide hydrant flushing program, begun in 1993, has successfully improved our water quality. But before we enjoyed our success, we had to overcome a few problems. We began by using 2 1/2‐in. conical hydrant diffusers, which effectively spot‐flushed hydrants. However, these diffusers could not deliver the volume of water needed to flush hydrants throughout the system. The flushing crew requested a 4‐in. diffuser to provide higher flows and reduce the time needed to completely flush hydrants. After unsuccessful attempts to locate a 4‐in. diffuser that was suitable, the department fabricated their own. Materials and construction information are included.

This month's question asks about the trend in per capita water use by state. The answer refers the reader to the August 1994 issue of Opflow, where a U.S. map with per capita water use by state is featured. The source for the map was the U.S. Geological Survey Circular 765 (1977). A table providing statistics for public‐supplied freshwater use by state is included in this article for the years 1975, 1980, 1985, and 1990.

When a waterborne disease outbreak occurs or the serious threat of an outbreak exists, state and local health agencies issue boil‐water advisories to the public. By boiling water intended for consumption, consumers can protect themselves against microbial disease‐causing agents that may be present. The author discusses how waterborne microbes are inactivated through temperature and also lists contact times.
