For three commonly used gases ‐ chlorine, sulfur dioxide, and ammonia ‐ maximum sustained gas withdrawal rates from shipping containers can be estimated using a simple equation. The equation requires that the operator know the room temperature, the “threshold temperature,” and a “withdrawal factor.” This article explains the terms of the equation and gives examples of its application.

Many treatment plants have synchronous motors driving the pumps. Occasionally, the motor slip rings require machining in place with a special lathe cutting tool and holder designed for that purpose. This machining operation can be simplified with the method described in this article.
