In order to prevent mercury contamination of water supplies by mercury‐filled flow meters, the Naval Environmental Protection Support Service in Port Hueneme, California recommends that such meters be replaced with mechanical or state‐of‐the‐art units which do not contain mercury.

Water utility operators must prepare emergency procedures for their customers in anticipation of emergencies such as system contamination or service interruptions. Customers should be informed that water cannot be presumed safe to drink under emergency conditions and that all water should be purified by boiling or by adding chemicals before consumption. Water purification procedures and emergency water supplies are described.

Featured in this month's “Gimmicks and Gadgets” is a fire hydrant lifting jig which permits easier repair of fire hydrants. The jig clamps around the barrel below the bonnet, and chains fastened to the jig corners lift a hydrant evenly from its stem.
