摘要:
We were pleased with the overall results of our ongoing campaign to communicate good news. Instead of using survival tactics to defend ourselves against the media, we used principles of publicity seeking, attracting media attention to our monitoring results. Because of our new communications plan, we have established and strengthened our media relationships which, as we have learned, can only help us during times of crisis.

摘要:
This month's question asks what AWWA does to help small water systems; why aren't small water systems represented in the leadership of AWWA Sections; and, how can a small water system manager play a meaningful role in AWWA at the section level? The answer stresses that too much is made of the distinction between small and large water systems; regardless of size, all water systems face the same challenge of consistently delivering water of acceptable quality and quantity to customers. The article states that all systems, regardless of size, use Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater as a tool for measuring the same maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). The article provides an example of a small systems manager moving up through the ranks in AWWA to become the Chair of AWWA's Intermountain Section .

摘要:
Since before the Cape San Juan Water District on San Juan Island, Washington, was formed, those volunteers in the community responsible for operation of the water system have made a strong effort to keep everyone informed of the system's conditions and problems. Members of the brigade derive a lot of satisfaction because they help to preserve the district's fragile water supply, saving the district—and themselves‐‐a lot of money. The brigade also gets formal recognition by the water district at the community annual meeting.

摘要:
If a water system violates a drinking water regulation, public notification is required. The purpose of public notification is to inform consumers of any potential adverse health effects related to their drinking water and the steps consumers can take to minimize their health risk. Properly done, public notices can benefit the water suppliers as well as the public. If customers understand the problem and the steps being taken to correct it, panic and angry phone calls may be prevented. Used positively, public notification can be a useful tool in communicating with customers.

摘要:
The waste streams from the Manchester Water Treatment Plant are captured and clarified by a series of sedimentation lagoons. Because these lagoons are located below the hydraulic gradeline of the plant's headworks, we must pump the effluent from these lagoons to allow recycle. The lagoon level is regulated by a handwheel‐operated sluice overflow weir. The effluent that leaves the lagoon often contains leaves, sticks, and other floating debris, which routinely clogs the impellers of the solids‐handling pumps. We developed a subsurface lift station to limit the amount of solids passing through the system.

摘要:
In past years, the biannual change of water pump motor oil required the labor and time of two or three workers. One worker would hold a 5 gallon drain bucket, a second worker loosened and removed the oil drain plug, and a third worker cleaned up the mess. To improve this messy, time‐consuming process, employees from the City of Mesquite Water Production Department developed a simple, inexpensive solution that saves time and money. A list of materials and costs is included.
