摘要:
To many of us, life in a rural community means a healthy, pollution‐free environment‐‐clean streets, fresh air, and safe drinking water. Thoughts of chemical contamination seem out of place in such pleasant surroundings. But the flowered meadows and rippling creeks, which attract so many retirees and big‐city dropouts, may hide an environmental nightmare. The truth is communities of all sizes‐‐and the water systems that serve them‐‐are vulnerable to contamination. This article happens to focus on one small rural system located near Centralia, Washington, and what happened when they found extremely high levels of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in their drinking water.

摘要:
This is Part II of an article discussing Cryptosporidium. This part explains the processes of detection, filtration and chlorination for control. A 12‐Point Action Plan for systems to handle and prevent Crypto outbreaks is also included.

摘要:
Because steel grating hatch doors are heavy, workers have a tendency to leave them in an open position (creating a safety hazard) or in a closed position (deterring operator duties). Using a counterweight, a lone plant operator can open or close grate doors without risking a back injury. The article lists materials and construction instructions.

摘要:
Converting to the metric system of measurement is much like becoming bilingual. Like translators who understand a foreign language, those who are familiar with both systems will lead the way during the years of conversion. Changing from one metric unit to another is a simple matter of moving a decimal point from one place to another. This month, we will look primarily at metric‐to‐metric conversions.

摘要:
This month's question concerns water loss and how to determine an acceptable level of water loss. The answer says that from 10 to 15 percent unaccounted‐for‐water is acceptable and indicates that the water system is performing well. The article explains how to determine a system's rate of water loss, commonly known as unaccounted‐for water, by computing the metered ratio.
