摘要:
What has gone on for years in your utility may be illegal today. Does this ever happen in your system? An elderly director regularly given the “girls” in the office a hug. During breaks, employees tell off‐color jokes. Some employees bring Playboy‐type magazines and calendars to work. The superintendent/operator/manager sees to it that he's often alone with one employee. The superintendent/operator/manager teases about sexual favors in return for getting ahead. If so, you may be courting a sexual harassment complaint and/or lawsuit.

摘要:
The Fort Worth, Texas, Water Department has installed an innovative ammonia feed system at its Rolling Hills Water Treatment Plant. This article presents the rationale for the new feed system, including problems with the traditional ammonia feed system and its inability to handle the varied water pressures that occurred after a new ammonia injection site on the raw water pipeline was installed.

摘要:
The work environment continues to change–greater diversity, longer work weeks, less‐is‐more staffing, and the never ending balancing act of work and personal demands. Today's work requirements mean more time with our co‐workers. And, if based on mutual respect and sensitivity, these professional relationships can promote job satisfaction. This article suggests having a written sexual harassment policy statement.

摘要:
Cryptosporidium is a parasite found in lakes and rivers, especially where the water is contaminated with sewage and animal wastes. Very resistant to disinfection, Cryptosporidium has caused several large waterborne disease outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms of the disease, cryptosporidiosis, include diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps. This article discusses the recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Environmental Protection Agency to immunocompromised individuals in regards to avoiding cryptosporidiosis.

摘要:
Before water managers, operators, and regulators can enhance treatment plant performance, it is essential to identify effective methods to accurately assess plant processes. There are many ways to evaluate plant conditions, including: particle counting; a composite correction program (CCP); turbidity reduction; microscopic particulate analysis (MPA); and pathogen removal. To enhance treatment plant operations, it is important to use an assessment tool that: provides enough sensitivity to evaluate even subtle changes in plant performance, and can produce repeatable information for comparing day‐to‐day operations. Although several tools are available, we will focus here on particle counting. Armed with our tool, we must now select a meaningful measurement to use with it.

摘要:
This month's question concerns the benefits of operator certification and training. The answer states that while it is not mandatory that operators are certified, AWWA favors mandatory certification of the persons in responsible charge of water treatment and distribution facilities. Most states have specific training criteria for certification. The article discusses continuing education units (CEUs) and prerequisite courses for certification. Training resources are given, along with information on self‐study programs and training resources offered by AWWA.
