摘要:
Beginning Dec. 31, 1990, water systems must meet new US Environmental Protection Agency standards for coliform. All systems will experience some change, and many will be unable to comply. Compliance with the new rule is based on the absence of total coliforms (including fecal coliform or E. coli). Instead of measuring for the number of total coliforms in a sample, water systems will test for their presence or absence. If tests show that total coliforms are present in the sample, then other tests and more samples will be required. If further testing shows the presence of fecal coliform or E. coli, then the public must be notified. The article discusses monitoring, test methods, positive tests, repeat sampling, invalid samples, public notification, sanitary surveys, and variances and exemptions.

摘要:
For small systems, keeping track of all that has to be done and when to do it can be a major headache. This article presents a template for creating a monthly‐yearly calendar/organizer to help make items that you can't afford to forget jump out at you.

摘要:
A few years ago, a three‐man crew was digging a trench for a new water line with a backhoe. The hoe was not maintained according to any scheduled program recommended by the manufacturer's specifications. Among the many maintenance problems with the hoe was the fact that the starter button did not work and the safety catch on the gearshift was broken. In order to start the machine, the operator used a screwdriver to engage the starter. When he did, the gearshift engaged causing the vehicle to lunge forward. When it did, the vehicle ran over a co‐worker and he was killed.

摘要:
The Superior (Wis.) Water, Light and Power Company needed a simple way to sample the bottom 30 in. (760 mm) of a sedimentation basin. Foreman John Zakowski developed a device for under $25 that is easy to build and use. Construction information is presented.
