摘要:
AbstractStratigraphic and structural changes, radiometrically and biostratigraphically dated, from basins and basement across New Zealand, indicate that the modern Australia‐Pacific plate boundary, including the Alpine fault sector, formed between 28 and 24 Ma. This age range coincides with changes at about 25 Ma in the trends of the Hawaiian and Louisville hotspot chains, and a 27–25 Ma reorganization of spreading on the Antarctic‐Pacific spreading ridge. It also follows closely the 28.5 Ma initiation of subduction of the East Pacific Rise south of Mendocino fracture zone that lead to formation of the San Andreas continental transform. The late Oligocene Pacific‐wide tectonic reorganization may have been triggered by this ridge‐trench

摘要:
AbstractUsing a one‐dimensional (1D) fluid flow/compaction model applied to wells of the Georges Bank Basin, east coast, USA, has enabled a simulation to be made of the history of the sedimentation, basement subsidence, tectonic activity, geoheat flux evolution, maturation of organic matter, hydrocarbon generation, and migration tendency.Based on the analysis of the basement tectonic activity, the basin's development is related to the formation and the evolution of the east edge of the North American plate. Through the simulation of geoheat flux variation, maturation of organic material and hydrocarbon generation at different positions in the basin at different time periods are analysed. Additionally, from the modelling of excess fluid pressure, porosity and permeability variations in the strata, the potential hydrocarbon migration tendency and stratigraphic traps in the basin are discusse

摘要:
AbstractA shallow and damaging earthquake struck the region of Tipaza located on the coast, 70 km to the west of Algiers (north‐central Algeria). The main shock was felt as far as 200 km from the epicentral area and particularly in the urbanized zone of Algiers. The main shock epicentre determined by CRAAG is on Mt Chenoua, close to the coastline. Coseismic surface breaks with 4.0 km of fault length and 7.0 cm of vertical displacement appeared on the southern side of Mt Chenoua. They consist of cracks and fissures on vertical bedding planes that belong to a Neogene flexure. The aftershock activity was recorded for several weeks and comprised more than 100 seismic events per day, with 1

摘要:
This is the story of the rise and fall, over a twenty‐year period, of one of the worlds largest mining operations. It was inspired by recent rumblings over an embryonic gold mining project in Greenland, earlier reported in these pages (Brooks, 1990) coupled with my own experience in the South Pacific region where I came frequently as a guest of Bougainville Copper Ltd. During these early stages of the Greenland project I became convinced that here was a potential for a repetition of the Bougainville saga. There are many striking similarities, although these are not the subject of this note. Rather, the intention is to increase awareness of Bougainville, which was a great success, turned sour. If nothing more comes out of it, perhaps we can learn to avoid repetition some time and some place in the future. Forwarned is forarme

摘要:
Constantly assailed as we are by new ideas in Geology, it can be a sobering experience to restudy the works of the pioneers of our subject. The aim of the present series is to present cameos of important thinkers, whose fundamental contributions seem to have been forgotten or glossed over in the trimmed curricula we meet at universities today. Who, today, is told of the brilliant ideas of Johannes Walther, the many genial thoughts of Alcide d'orbigny, or the innovativeness of Charles Lyell. This new series presents vignettes of the life and times of early notables and the fact that all was not milk and honey in the pursuit of knowledge. The first profile we shall consider isSven Nilsson, an important figure of the last century in Scandinavian natural history, including palaeontology. Our readership is invited to contribute articles on the founders of geo‐science in their own countries. Let us learn again what Choffat, Suess, Oppel, Backlund, Brogger, Sowerby, Lapworth, Brongniart, d'orbigny, von Schlotheim, etc. contributed to our pool of knowledge. The ‘wheel’ has been rediscovered many times in geology.SVEN NILSSON (1787
