摘要:
This article examines recent work in diagnostic reasoning in nursing and compares it with work done in expert systems, a branch of artificial intelligence. Diagnostic reasoning is examined in terms of human information processing, with the rationale being that by understanding the human diagnostic process more fully one can construct an expert system that can truly support work being done by nurses. Finally, this article examines how expert systems are constructed and how knowledge and problem-solving rules are represented. Applications of expert systems to both practice and educational settings are suggested, and published work concerning expert systems currently in use are described.

A needs assessment was conducted among 445 nurse educators and nurse managers in a northeastern metropolitan area to determine the content for computer courses. Collaboration occurred between representatives of nursing education and nursing practice for the development of the survey. The major finding was that there are definite differences between nurse educators and nurse managers regarding computer applications.

摘要:
This study tested the validity of the wrist actigraph as a sleep onset indicator. Study subjects were 40 hospitalized 3− to eight-year-old children who were observed for two to three nights during sleep onset latency (SOL) (from finalized bedtime preparation to ensuing sleep). Continuous observations were encoded on an electronic keyboard of the Senders Signals Receivers (SSR) system using a pre-established and validated catalog of child bedtime behaviors. A wrist actigraph used to monitor activity level recorded the occurrence or nonoccurrence of activity in the subject. Attached to a binary input device, the actigraph allowed recording of wrist movements simultaneously with encoded behaviors on the SSR system. Results showed that activity level as recorded by the actigraph decreased markedly from Stage I (very awake) to Stage III (asleep) of SOL. Furthermore, observational data showed that the total number of behaviors also decreased from Stage I to Stage III. The wrist actigraph was a valid indicator of sleep onset.

摘要:
This study used selected qualitative and meta-analytic techniques to synthesize research findings from 11 independent studies of computer assisted instruction in nursing education. The findings were similar to those of reviews of research on computer assisted instruction at other educational levels. Nursing students who used computer assisted instruction learned more than those who had traditional instruction, and did so in less time. The students also developed positive attitudes toward computers as an instructional method. Few relationships were found between the studies' findings and study characteristics. Recommendations were made regarding applications of computer assisted instruction to nursing education, research, and future reviews.
