Like many other hospitals, Pitt County Memorial Hospital (PCMH) has been confronted with the costly dilemma of retaining professional nurses. In a collaborative effort with two local nursing schools (BSN and ADN) and an area health education center, PCMH developed a project, named CoVenture, to facilitate the transition from student to practitioner role. CoVenture focuses on three key areas: clinical competency, adjustment, and pragmatics of the hospital system. The CoVenture design includes extensive use of computer assisted instruction to assist nurses with skill aquisition. This program can be replicated in similar agencies where cooperation between education and practice is desirable.

Computer managed instruction (CM1) contributes to the success of a mastery learning nursing program. CMI provides important and necessary information to faculty and students. This article describes why the system was needed, how it was developed, and how it is used for testing and monitoring student progress.

Several emerging trends in our society are accentuating the need for effective, systematic health care instruction. This article examines the inadequacies of prevalent patterns of health care instruction and investigates the computer's potential as the nurse's partner in this endeavor. The theoretical basis for such an alliance is explored, along with the advantages and limitations of computer assisted instruction for patients. The article reviews the literature for reports of the computer's usefulness as a partner in health care instruction and concludes by endorsing the use of well-designed computer programs for supplemental patient education.

As nurses become involved in designing computer assisted instruction (CAI) courseware, they must be aware of the design sequences needed to develop instructionally effective CAI. An instructional design approach focuses on analyzing need, instructional task, and learner; stating learning outcomes; choosing instructional strategies; incorporating pedagogical principles; and testing, revising, and using the program. An instructional product development model can be used to assure that each design element is included. Learning is facilitated when instruction is planned and learning is intentional. An instructional design approach, therefore, can be useful in assisting nurse CAI authors in developing effective CAI courseware.
