摘要:

This nursing research project was conducted to validate the baseline data (minutes) assigned to nursing interventions used in the automated Patient Care Planning (PCP) System which, as a by-product, estimated the number of hours of direct nursing care required by each patient. A time study showed a significant difference between the system time values and the recorded time values. Further analysis showed no significant difference between system time values and recorded time values when the system time values had been assigned based on estimates by Clinical Specialists and Nurse Clinicians. The results supported those of previous studies that found that standard times should not be measured in one hospital environment and implemented in another. In addition, the findings supported the hypothesis that nurses with clinical expertise in a hospital could estimate accurately the standard times for interventions performed in their environments. The problem of making sense of data collected in broadly descriptive studies of a process of clinical interest (e.g., mother-infant interaction) is complicated by the relatively large number of types of events that must be recorded and the large amount of data generated. Furthermore, a process is likely to be organized in terms of phases and to vary in structure over time. The nature or meaning of an event is likely to vary with its context. The use of observational data for the purpose of hypothesis generation must, therefore, take into account the phase and structure of the process as well as the context in which events occur. However, phase, structure, and context are obscured by summary statistics, and the pattern of events in relation to each other cannot be extracted in a linear printout of the data stream. This article describes a method of presenting and summarizing complex observational data graphically, using a study of mother-infant interactions during feeding to illustrate its application for examination of events in context and across phases of the process over time.

This article identifies the need for more specific guidelines for preparing faculty members to use and develop computer-based instructional materials. Planning considerations are outlined and components of this multifaceted approach to faculty development are discussed: identifying available resources, emphasizing the current uses of computers, providing computer literacy/faculty awareness sessions, focusing on the instructional use of microcomputers, collaboration, and communication.

This article offers guidelines for developing a test question bank using a word processing program on a microcomputer. Suggestions are given for organizing and coding questions, and specific directions are included for formatting and using the search and replace options to create multiple versions of situation questions. A how-to section is included to take the reader through each step in the process of selecting questions from the test bank to create a paper version of a test.
