The nurse managers at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center (UMMC) examined their staffing functions and found that an average of 2 workdays per month were needed for scheduling. The managers resolved to investigate alternatives to reduce the time required and provide the desired staff coverage determined by the manager. The alternative chosen was to computerize scheduling. The Automated Nurse Staffing Office System (ANSOS) met the managers' needs and meshed with the decentralized organizational structure of the facility. This package offered a management information system that reduced scheduling time from an average of 2 days per month to an average of 2 hours per month. In addition, managers were able to automate other managerial functions.UMMC, a 350-bed tertiary hospital, has successfully implemented automated scheduling while preserving a decentralized organization and philosophical structure. The UMMC experience of “gearing up” for an automated scheduling system is shared as a guideline for nurses who are contemplating system automation.

Our experience in developing a computer-based interactive video instructional program on nonverbal communication provides the basis for this report. Factors influencing the choice of the computer-based media and the instructional environment of the school are discussed. The Whitney Authoring System (INSIGHT 1000 PLUS), major authoring tasks, and the general program sequence are detailed. Key points that are intended to guide other potential computer authors identify important considerations that need to be addressed when undertaking a major interactive video project.

Computerized database management can be a time-saving and effective mechanism by which the nurse administrator can store, organize, and retrieve important information, such as staffing patterns within and across units, nursing staff characteristics, nursing care efficiency, and client care costs, among many others. This article describes the basic terminology and fundamental principles that underlie database management systems. Brief guidelines are included at the conclusion of the paper to assist nurse administrators in selecting appropriate microcomputer database management programs suitable for their unique informational needs and based upon their data structure, as well as the resources and restrictions of the user environment. A database management system can provide the nurse administrator with a superior method for the storage and retrieval of information, as well as an effective and efficient mechanism for organizational problem solving, institutional planning, and the conduct of nursing research.

The purpose of this study was to measure nurses' attitudes toward computerization using a valid and reliable questionnaire. The sample included 225 nurses who work at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. One hundred and eighty-five nurses (82%) completed the questionnaire. Eight hypotheses were proposed, and three of these demonstrated significant (p<0.05) results: educational preparation, length of service in the nursing profession, and nursing unit make a difference in nurses' attitudes toward computerization.
