摘要:
AbstractThe tactile communication between the symbiotic gobyCryptocentrus steinitziand its burrowing shrimp partnerAlpheus purpurilenticulariswas investigated by film analysis. Warning signals of the goby which elicit the retreat of the shrimp into its burrow consist mainly of rapid fin flicks transmitted to the shrimp through its long antennae. Five different parameters of the structure of the warning signal were analyzed. The effect of various variables on the response of the shrimp and its latency were examined with a stepwise multiple regression analysis. Feedback mechanisms involved in this communication system are described. The evolution of the tail flick warning signal and a model describing the relationship between the main elements involved in the generation of warning signals are discussed.

摘要:
AbstractThe courtship behavior of an otitid fly,Physiphora demandata, is analyzed with a description of the 7 displays used by ♂♂ and the response of ♀♀ to courting ♂♂. ♂♂ employ the displays one after another to create highly variable courtship sequences that may consist of thousands of individual acts. The adaptive significance of such complex courtship is discussed.P. demandatamay be an example of a species in which ♂♂ can neither control resources of significance to ♀♀ nor monopolize ♀♀ directly. As a result, female choice may be based purely on the demonstration of male genetic quality as shown by the ♂'s ability to hold a perch territory in an aggregation of ♂♂ and the ♂'s capacity to com

摘要:
AbstractSocial relationships were studied in a herd of Camargue horses and are described in terms of certain aggressive and non‐aggressive interactions and in terms of spatial patterning. Relationships between mares and their foal and yearling offspring were studied in detail. The effect of the activity of the herd on spatial patterning is described and changes in social behaviour due to the horsefly season are discusse

摘要:
AbstractVocalizations of titi monkeys were recorded from 6 groups at two sites in the llanos of Colombia during 8 months of study. Frequency and temporal measurements from spectrograms of recordings, and differences in their patterns of use, were used to characterize call types. Animals repeat calls to form phrases, and combine phrases to form sequences. The six sequence types, defined by different transition probabilities between phrases, varied in proportion in different contexts. To examine the effect of order of phrases on response, I played back artificially constructed sequences to subject groups. I discuss hierarchical and sequential mechanisms as generators' of vocal sequences, and draw comparisons with models of human language.

摘要:
AbstractSocial and behavioral interactions as well as individual roosting positions were followed in a colony ofCarollia perspicillataunder seminaturalistic captive conditions. Nearest neighbor and grid analyses were used to define the composition of basic social units and mapping data permitted an analysis of the compositional stability of these units. Correlations between female reproductive cycles and individual roosting patterns provided insight into the function ofCarolliasocial groups and indicate that optimal strategies to enhance reproductive success are probably being used.

摘要:
AbstractThe assumption of a linear dominance hierarchy accounted for 78% of the outcomes of aggressive interactions in a group of 26 mature male American bison (Bison bison) during a breeding season. All recorded interactions between bulls were initiated aggressively, and 88% of all interactions were won by the initiator. The dominant‐subordinant roles were reversed at least once in most dyads during the three weeks. Neither age nor body weight were correlated with high social standing. Bulls with higher social standing had higher breeding rate
