Abstract and SummarySongs were recorded from two separate populations of brown‐headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater). High levels of song sharing were found in each and, in one population, paired males shared more song types than did the remainder of the population. Song learning, in conjunction with low dispersal, is thought to contribute heavily to song sharing in this species.

Abstract and SummaryMale American redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) exhibit two modes of singing: repeat mode, characteristic of the early stages of breeding prior to arrival of females and before nesting; and serial mode, which prevails later when nesting has commenced and thereafter. Repeat mode consists of the repetition of a single song type, usually a song that has an “accented” ending such that the terminal phone is not repeated. The remainder of a male's repertoire is sung serially without much immediate repetition, and these songs usually do not have unrepeated endings (“unaccented”). Two examples of each mode were presented to territorial adult ( 2 years old) males, both early in the season when most often they were singing repeat mode, and later in the breeding cycle, when males more often sang serial mode. Earlier studies hypothesized different functions for these modes and one study claimed a difference in response during playback. In the present study, there were no distinguishable differences in responses by males to either singing mode, nor between the two modes at either time during the breeding season. We discuss the results relative to the earlier claims and to alternative functional hypotheses.

AbstractEgglaying aggregations, mate fidelity and male and female mate choice and mating behaviour of the African pyrgomorphid grasshopperZonocerus elegansare described from the field. Several hundred males and females were individually marked at oviposition sites. Pairs remained stable over days, during egglaying and presumably also over the weeks prior to egglaying. In addition to long‐term consorting with a female, males may try to obtain inseminations by “footpad”–tactics at oviposition sites. It is suggested that prolonged consorting and repeated copulations increase the female's reproductive output as well as the male's share in it. Our data and the literature indicate that males are involved not only in rival competition but also in a “battle of the sexes” which females are likely to win. The intra– and intersexual “war on two fronts” results behaviourally in elaborate mating tactics and anatomically in highly developed internal female genitalia and male copulatory organs (well known taxonomic characters). This applies not only to grasshoppers but also to other insec

Abstract and SummaryThe influence of testosterone on the general architecture of the song of castrated canaries was studied. Testosterone was applied to juvenile and adult castrated birds by silastic implants of testosteronepropionate. Song parameters such as frequency distribution of pauses between vocalizations, length of tours and stability of elements within a tour were measured.1. An adult castrated male is able to sing spontaneously; these songs coincide in frequency distribution of pauses, length of tours and stability of elements within a tour with the characteristics of autumnal song. These parameters reach values typical for fullsong after one week of hormone treatment. 30–40 days after the first implantation an obvious elongation of tours occurs.2. Young castrated birds do not sing when adults without hormone replacement. The pause frequency distribution typical for fullsong is established after one week of testosterone treatment. These animals showed the same elongation of tours after a longer hormone therapy (30–40 days). The stability of elements within a tour needed 30–40 days to reach fullsong values. The influences of testosterone on specific levels of hierarchical song organization were discussed: there is an increase of motivation; the syntax of fullsong is activated by the hormone treatment; a differentiation of motor capabilities is induced in young castrated birds.

AbstractThe nest construction behaviour of two newCamponotus (Karavaievia)species from Malaysia, which were described by Dumpert (1985) asC. texensandC. gombaki, were examined. Both species weave silk nests, which are attached under leaves in the case ofC. texensand between leaves in the case ofC. gombaki. WhileC. texensregularly houses scale insects in its pavilions, single scale insects were found in only 3 out of 94C. gombakipavilions. The pavilions ofC. texenshave as a rule one chamber, those ofC. gombakioften have several.BothCamponotusspecies weave their nests with the help of last instar larvae. The weaving behaviour ofC. texenswas examined by the evaluation of films. The weaver larvae, held by the ♀♀ near the front end of their bodies and mechanically stimulated by their antennae, make swinging movements with their front end as they expel their silk. During the weaving sand particles, detritus and bits of plants are fetched by other ♀♀ and built into the silk layer. A third group of ♀♀ works on the as yet loose silk and in this way is responsible for the relatively smooth and firm surface of the finished web. Cooperative leaf pulling of ♀♀ during nest construction was not observed. As far as observations were possible, they revealed no difference in the nest construction behaviour ofC. texensandC. gombaki. Whether cooperation occurs inC. gombakicould not be elucidated.Scale insects are carried into the finished pavilions by thetexens♀♀. They are taken from pavilions with a high density of scale insects. Laboratory observations in which scale insects were pulled by the ♀♀ from leaves outside of the pavilions and thrown to the ground speak for a regulation of the density of the scale insect population. In Malaysia no scale insects were found on the nest tree outside the pavilions. Apart fromC. texensno other ants were found on the nest tree.C. gombaki, on the other hand, inhabited the nest tree together with ants of the generaPolyrhachis, Tetraponera, Cataulacus, and Echinopla. While the manner of nesting ofCamponotus gombakiis similar to that ofPolyrbachis, Camponotus texensrepresents a new type of weaver ant. Its territory is dominated by one‐chamber pavilions. It usually houses scale insects inside the pavilions and is as highly differentiated in its nest building behaviour asOecophyllabut in a different manner.
