Zusammenfassung1. Summary1. Larvae ofCoregonusbegin swimming immediately after hatching by undulations of the body. Larvae of pike adhering to a substrate spend time of yolk‐sac absorption nearly immovable.2. After yolk‐sac absorptionCoregonusand pike catch prey for the first time, larvae especially Copepoda.3. Pikes fill their swimbladder before first feeding whileCoregonus larvaehave no swimbladder at this time.4. The first prey capture was analysed by films. It consists of innate components such as binocular fixation of prey objects, approaching, pushing forward and snapping.5. Pikes notice movement of the prey transverse to the longitudinal of their own body. Their posture before pushing forward depends on the movement direction of prey objects. While pushing forward the pikes' head deviates obligatory to one side determined by the choosed starting‐posture. The deviation is identical with the movement direction of the prey. The reactions of the fish are innate.6. Caused by acquisition of skillCoregonusand pike snap with

Zusammenfassung1. Summary1. The coherence in small groups of parentless young fish in the primary phase of schooling is good inT. macrocephala(male mouthbrooder) and inT. nilotica(female mouthbrooder). There is none inT. tholloni(substrate brooder).2. The intensity of coherence in groups of two specimens (twin‐group) increases at the same rate as morphological differentiation. The intensity of contact therefore depends not on the species, but on the phase of development. In one and the same phase of morphological differentiation a twin‐group combining members of different species is as stable as a twin‐group composed by one species.3. The members of the twin‐group approach each other only up to a minimum distance. This minimum distance increases at the rate of the growth of the animals and is practically identical in the three species.4. Young fish of all three species react upon artificial schools composed of globules. Even single globules induce single animals to following reactions. Minimum‐ and maximum‐distances seem to be determined by two angles of constant opening in which objects are seen.5. Apart from the immediate optical contact between the animals (twin‐group), optomotor reactions are also very important for schooling.6. It is not necessary to assume different factors determining the behaviour patterns in schooling for the three species. The reason for different behaviour in the primary phases of schooling lies in the difference of the developmental stages.7. The stages of development of the three species are compared among each other; it is shown that the differences in the porcesses of development depend on different egg‐sizes.8. The development of motion of embryos and young fish is studied and compared with the somatic development. Only in an early stage of developmentT. thollonidiffers in behaviour fromT. niloticaandT. macrocephalaby the so called wriggling which is typical for larvae of substrate brooder.T. thollonidevelops ‘wriggling’ to the swimming motions which the two other species assume immedi

Summary1. A new deafening technique for day‐old chicks of the domestic fowl is described.2. Audiospectrographic comparisons of vocal signals were made between normal birds on the one hand and birds that had been experimentally deafened at an early age on the other. It was demonstrated that insofar as the types are concerned, the deaf birds could develop the normal repertoire and forms of vocalization. The detailed comparisons of sound structures are difficult because of individual variation and grading in the calls.3. One adult cock was deafened to determine the effects of deafening on the maintenance of its vocal signals. The result indicated that the forms of the calls studied here remained unchanged after deafening, although some change occurred in the detailed aspect of its crowing.4. Most vocal signals are morphologically discrete and tend to carry qualitatively different information. The quantitative aspect of environmental and motivational information is conveyed by grading of signals. Most signals can convey both types of information simultaneously. Several methods of achieving this purpose were described.5. The fact that the birds could develop and also maintain the normal repertoire and forms of their vocal signals without auditory feedback does not necessarily mean that the forms of the various vocal signals are determined by a centrally patterned motor command, although it is the most probable mechanism. The involvement of nonauditory feedback in the control of the central motor output has not yet been excluded in this case.Zusammenfassung1.
