摘要:
AbstractFourteen sites were chosen in eight subjects where pre‐operatively less than 2 mm of keratinised gingiva was present and associated with pocketing of less than 1.0 mm Three methods were used to provide gingival connective tissue for grafting which facilitated primary closure at the donor site. The pre‐operative width of keratinised gingiva was measured by means of a Williams probe from the gingival margin to the mucogingival junction to the nearest 0.5 mm. This was repeated immediately post‐operatively, and at 1, 2, 5, 10, and 12 weeks, and at 6 months. The results showed that a statistically significant increase in width of keratinised attached gingiva could be achieved with this method and the resultant tissue was histologically n

摘要:
AbstractPeriodontal defects were created in all four quadrants of six monkeys. The areas were filled with biodegradable tricalcium phosphate ceramic. Specimens were examined historically from 1 to 9 weeks after placement of the material. The results indicate that the ceramic is well tolerated by the tissues and that lost periodontium is regenerated. Also, the used ceramic may be a stimulator of bone formation.

摘要:
AbstractThe vibrating tips of ultrasonic instruments have been shown to remove deposits mechanically. Calculus removal is equally effective with ultrasonic or hand instruments, whereas stain removal has been shown to be better with the former. It has been observed that ultrasonic instruments remove heavy supragingival calculus faster than hand instruments. According to the evidence available most patients and operators prefer ultrasonic scaling to hand scaling. The effect ofin vivoultrasonic scaling on root surface has not been established. Various factors possibly influencing the occurrence of tooth surface roughness subsequent to ultrasonic scaling have been pointed out. No harmful effects have been found in the adjacent periodontal structures following ultrasonic instrumentation. However, it has been suggested that the cavitation spray accompanying ultrasonic instrumentation may carry pathogenic organisms. The advantages and the disadvantages of ultrasonic instruments have been evaluated.

摘要:
AbstractThe retention of chlorhexidine in the oral cavity after rinsing with 10 ml 0.2 % [14C]‐chlorhexidine‐digluconate for 1 min was found to be 3.8 mg (S.D. = 1.4 mg) in a group of 12 edentulous patients. By comparison, the mean oral retention in 10 dental students with cleaned and polished teeth was 4.6 mg (S.D. = 0.7 mg). Measurement of the retention in 6 subjects before and after extensive tooth extractions showed no major influence of the teeth on the chlorhexidine retention.Plaque accumulation for 6 d increased the mean Plaque Index from 0 to 0.82 (S.D.=0.35). The corresponding mean oral retention increased significantly from 4.6 mg (S.D.=0.7 mg) to 5.6 mg (S.D.=1.1 mg).Chlorhexidine was readily bound to acrylic resin dentures. A mean binding of 4.2 mg (S.D.=2.0) after 16 min immersion in 110 ml 0.2% chlorhexidine solution was found. The [14C] activity of the saliva showed a sharp fall during the first few hours after insertion of the dentures, followed by a slow release, with activity still present after 2

摘要:
AbstractMiddle‐class schoolgirls who attended their dentists regularly were questioned about their knowledge and behaviour relating to periodontal disease. The girls had very little knowledge about their susceptibility to periodontal disease, its consequences and the early sign of the disease, namely bleeding. Nevertheless they brushed their teeth regularly. (Details are given in Tables 1–8.) These findings cast some doubt on the applicability of the Rosenstock‐Hochbaum model of health behaviour to preventive dental behaviour related to periodontal di
