The performance of a liquid-membrane electrode using a synthetic, neutral carrier in tris-(2-ethyl-hexyl)-phosphate as membrane component in a PVC matrix is described. Selectivities, working range and lifetime are discussed. The electrode makes possible the measurement of lithium ion activities in the range 1M to 10−5M. The selectivities of lithium over sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium are 20, 140, 6,000, and 1,900 respectively.

A new potentiometric method using iodide ion as an indicator is proposed for the detection of the end point in a titration of the negatively charged colloid. An iodide ion-selective electrode is used to follow the change of the iodide ion activity in the titration of polyvinyl sulfate (PVS) with tetradecyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (Zephiramine).

A new type of an ion selective electrode for nitrate ion was developed. Silver diethyldithiocarbamate, obtained by mixing a silver nitrate solution to a sodium diethyldithiocarbamate solution, was used as the active membrane material. The response to nitrate ion is linear with a Nernstian slope (60 mV/1 pNO3) over the concentration range 10−1to 10−6M in the pH range from 4 to 11. From IR spectra, the potential response to nitrate ion may arise from nitrate ion adsorbed in the membrane material. No response is observed to any cations, except hydrogen, mercury (II) and silver ions.

In the determination of fluoride ion with a fluoride ion-selective electrode, tiron is the most effective of masking agents tested for aluminum. The higher the pH, the more effective the masking, but the hydroxide ion raises the lower limit of determinable fluoride ion concentration at higher pH.

Three triiodo derivatives of benzoic acid have been separated and analyzed by differential pulse polarography in acidic, neutral and alkaline medium. The selectivity of the method, and a comparison of the resolution with conventional polarography, are pointed out. An order of reduction of the atoms is proposed.

The stability constants determined experimentally were correlated with Gibbs energies of ion—ligand interaction on the electrostatic level. Total charges on individual ligand atoms were calculated using the extended Hückel method (EHT). The inductive effect of the methyl group caused an increase of the stability constants for the macrotetrolides.

Though the two-wavelength spectrophotometric determination1without the function generator permitted measurement of one component contained in two-component mixtures without sample pretreatment, it required proper wavelength selection and could not analyze some kinds of samples. The method of two-wavelength spectrophotometric determination with the function generator herein reported has succeeded in eliminating these limitations thus permitting the analysis of many kinds of samples. This method has further made it possible to measure one component contained in three-component mixtures.

Carbon furnace atomic emission spectrometry has been used for the determination of lithium in copper. The method involves dissolution of the sample in nitric arid and direct injection into the carbon furnace. The detection limit for lithium is 0.00007 μg/ml Li in aqueous solution and 0.000014% Li in the copper samples.

The rapid determination of nanogram amounts of tin compounds using Molecular Emission Cavity Analysis is described. Binary mixtures of certain tin compounds e.g. dibutyltin oxide and tributyltin oxide can be determined simultaneously.

This report describes a radioimmunoassay method for the measurement of unconjugated 11-desoxycarticosterone (DOC) in plasma. Utilizing an anti-DOC antiserum cross reacting minimally with the steroids tested, combined with a one step celite microcolumn chromatography, we have measured this steroid accurately in aliquots of plasma from premenopausal female subjects. The plasma levels of DOC obtained by this method agreed well with levels observed in adult women, using other technics. During the 4 menstrual cycles studied, DOC levels were significantly higher in the luteal phases compared to the follicular phases in all 4 subjects.
