A liquid membrane calcium selective ion electrode was used to measure the free calcium content in equilibrium with calcium chelates. The chelating value, chelating curves, formation constants and equivalent weights of several detergent builders were calculated from these measurements.

The identity of proteins from chromatographic separations can be rapidly determined by immunoelectroosmophoresis. Column eluants can be serologically assayed by several specific antisera in 30 minutes. The assay is only limited by the number of specific anti-sera that can be prepared or commercially obtained.

The application of gas chromatography for the separation of TMS-amino acids from a botanical source was demonstrated. The trimethyl-silyl derivatives of the extracts from germ free tobacco tissue cultures were prepared by reacting amino acid extracts with bis(trimethylsilyl)-trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) using acetonitrile as a reaction solvent following preliminary separation of the free acids by ion exchange chromatography. Gas chromatographic separation was accomplished with a 10% OV-11 glass column and temperature programming. The findings compare favorably with other chromatographic methods. Structures of the TMS-amino acids were confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combination. Mass spectral data for each derivative is presented for the principal protein amino acids observed as well as γ-aminobutyric acid, asparagine, α-aminobutyric acid and β-alanine.

Oxime derivatives (methoxime, benzyloxime, trimethylsilyloxime) of 17-ketosteroids will, under some gas chromatographic conditions, undergo Beckmann fission in the injector zone. The result of this effect is partial or total conversion of the steroid derivative to a nitrile. Since oxime derivatives are widely used in gas chromatography for steroids and other compounds, it is important to recognize that this reaction may occur. In analytical separations conditions which do not lead to the fission reaction should be maintained.

Synthetic phosphatidylcholines have been separated by reversed phase chromatography. Columns of the acetate form of a Sephadex derivative containing long alkyl chains and dibutylamino groups were used in mixtures of chloroform, methanol and water. The mobility of a phosphatidylcholine was determined by the number of carbon atoms and the degree of unsaturation of the fatty acid chains.

A quantitative analytical method by electron spin resonance of some paramagnetic ions with very short spin-lattice relaxation times, is devised using the anomalous differential saturation of the hyperfine components of radiation produced and trapped H or D atoms as a probe.
