A rapid, simple and versatile analytical technique based on galvanio stripping has been proposed. In this technique, metal ions are preconcentrated onto a mercury film coated glassy carbon electrode (MFGCE). The amal-gamated metals are re-oxidized by galvanic stripping without the aid of any external electrical field or oxidant in solution. The development and relative advantages that can acorue by the utilization of this technique are discussed.

Inexpensive, disposable, carbon-filled polymer paste reference electrodes are reported. These electrodes are designed for use in conjuction with carbon-filled polymer paste ion-selective probes reported earlier. Attachment of integrated electronics is easily achieved.

The adsorption of carbon monoxide on smooth and Rh/Rh rhodium electrodes has been studied by potentiodynamic and radiochemical techniques. It was shown that there are marked differences between CO adsorption products on these two kinds of electrodes. The results were compared with the data of CO2adsorption studies on rhodium electrodes.

Polarographic catalytic reduction of iodate by molybdenum (VI) is investigated in an acetate-acetic acid solution of pH 5. The catalytic wave consisted of a peak at around -1.6 V vs SCE. The effect of pH, metal ion concentration, oxidant concentration, mercury column height, surfactants and neutral salt on the wave characteristics is studied. Probable explanations are offered.

At pH 2 the cathodic stripping of seawater at the HMDE displays two peaks (-0.520V and -0.260V). If the peak at -0.520V is due to humic and fulvic acids the other one is probably associated to traces of organic compounds (10−7M) having the thiocarboxylic functional group.

The color-reaction of chlorophosphonazo III (CPA III) with lanthanide ions has been studied. It is found that under optimum conditions a light and heavy rare earth binuclear chelate with CPA III, of which the ratio of the metals to CPA III is 1:1:3, can be formed and used for determination of trace amounts of light rare earths in the presence of heavy rare earths. The molar absorptivity maximum of the chelate is 5x1051 mol−1cm−1.

A method for the determination of trace and ultra-trace elements (Fe, Cu, Mn, Co, Cr, Mo and Ni) in milk by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry is described. Milk samples are injected directly into the graphite tube. Optimal operating conditions have been established. The method appears to be accurate and reproducible. The relative standard deviation was, on average, 9%.

Fluorine concentrations in US National Bureau of Standards standard reference materials 1632a (coal) and 1633a (coal fly ash) have been determined by proton induced gamma ray emission (PIGME) and spark source mass spectrometry (SSMS) using the method of standard additions. Good agreement was obtained between the two techniques with no significant bias. The mean values for 1632a and 1633a were ± 18 mg kg−1and 109 ± 11 mg kg−1respectively.

The applicability of the SiF and InF bands to determination of fluorine in a hollow cathode discharge has been studied. The InF bands have been used for the F determination in solid samples containing from 1% to 1x10−4% F, and in solutions for the F−concentration between 10 and 1000 mg 1−1. The lowest detected amount of fluorine in solid sample was 10 ng (1x10−5%).

The chromatographic saparation of Thorium, Titanium, Zirconium and eight rare earths has been attempted on DBBP, HDEHP and HDEHP-TOPO impregnated cellulose plates using the solvent system MaOH-6N HNO3−Acatyl acetone (20:15:5). An efficient seperation of 4–5 rare earths on HDEHP-TOPO impregnated plates has been achieved.
