A microcomputer was interfaced to a potentiostat, providing a fully automated system for linear-sweep and cyclic voltammetry. it was used for metal-ion analysis, by the determination of peak currents in a series of applied potential sweeps of increasing sweep rates. The slopes of the plots of peak current vs square root of sweep rate were calculated and related to the concentrationsvialinear equations. Carbon-paste electrodes were used and the equations for various electroactive species were found to be analytically applicable with newly prepared electrodes.

The effect of the inner solution on the potential in neutral carrier electrodes is considered constant in theoretical discussions. Because simplifying assumptions are made when deriving the potential equation, the purpose of this study has been to find out whether the measuring range of a valinomycin potassium electrode could be extended by changing the activity of the inner reference solution. The measurements show that changing the concentration of the inner solution in the range 10−5M - 0.1 M(1 M for calibration) does not affect the calibration curve, selectivity or the anion interference.

The departure from linear response which often occurs at dilute fluoride concentrations of the calibration curve reduces the sensitivity of the electrode. The linear portion of the standard curve may be extended to lower fluoride levels by dilution of the buffer itself. TISAB III M. tri-Ammonium citrate (TAC) is the superior of the eleven buffer systems examined in terms of masking ability. Of the potentially interfering species studied, only Al and Mg pose interference problems.

The number of water and organic solvent molecule adducts surrounding several ligands and metal chelates were determined in both the aqueous and organic phases. Data is presented to show that these adducts change in number during an extraction.

The sulfate ion is extracted into toluene with nonionic surfactant span 20 and crystal violet. A linear calibration curve was obtained between the absorbance due to crystal violet in the extract and sulfate concentrations over the range 2.5 × 10−5to 2.5 × 10−4mol 1−1(2.4 to 24 ppm) in the aqueous phase.

The atomic absorption spectroscopic behaviour of palladium in a graphite furnace has been investigated. The determination is several ordes of magnitude more sensitive than the flame technique. The use of Tantalum coated tubes does not improve considerably the sensitivity but prolongs the lifetime of the furnaces.

Quadrupole mass spectral analysis of the volatile uranium ligand complex bis (1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4 pentanedionato) dioxouranium-di-n-butyl sulfoxide is described utilizing electron impact (EI) and methane chemical ionization (CI) ion sources. All major ions are tentatively identified and the potential usefulness of this complex for determining uranium isotope 235U/238Uabundance is demonstrated.
