摘要:
The tin(II)-diphenylcarbazide complex, [Sn(C13H14N4O)2]Cl2or [Sn(C13H14N4O)2Cl2], applied as an acetone solution to cellulose (filter paper) or starch and dried, is oxidized to the red-violet diphenylcarbazone by ozone and nitrogen dioxide - the principal atmospheric oxidants - at concentrations below 1 ppm. The supported reagent is stable indefinitely when kept in a sealed bottle.

摘要:
Methods were investigated to measure exhaust emission rates of individual low-molecular-weight phenols from gasoline and diesel vehicles driven on a chassis dynamometer using the FTP driving cycle. An extraction procedure to isolate the phenols from exhaust scrubs was evaluated. Separation of individual phenols was done by gas chromatography, with detection by a flame ionization detector. Phenol identifications were confirmed by mass spectroscopy. Results of a limited survey of gasoline and diesel vehicles are reported.

Two methods of sampling high molecular weight vapours, gas syringe sampling and porous polymer adsorbent sampling were studied. The methods were compared using a saturated naphthalene reference vapour of known concentration. The results showed that the porous polymer adsorbent method was more accurate than the gas syringe method. The accuracies of both methods were dependent on details in their respective techniques. For porous polymer adsorbents it was shown that the technique should be such that passive sampling did not occur. Sample volume, sampling rate, the number of fills before injecting and cleaning the syringe before sampling all influenced the accuracy of the gas syringe sampling method.

Values for the ionization constants and the heats of ionization of phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate) have been determined by simultaneous potentiometric and thermal titration in a titration microcalorimeter. The potentiometric results are in substantial agreement with those found by discontinuous titration; the heat liberated from pH 10.4 to 6.8 is essentially that found using a batch microcalorimeter. Ionization of phytic acid may be generally characterized as having five groups similar to pK of phosphoric acid, two groups similar to pK2 of phosphoric acid and 4 groups similar to pK4 of pyrophosphoric acid. A single group has pK ∼ 5 with ΔHi∼ -1.1 kcal/mol.

A d.c. arc emission spectrographic method is described for the determination of sub ppm levels of Ba, Li and Sr and ppm levels of Cs, K and Na in high purity thorium oxide. The method which employs RbCl as carrier is simple and rapid and does not involve the use of any special atmosphere for exciting the sample. It was observed that RbCl shows definite improvement over AgCl in carrier action. The carrier distillation technique reported makes possible the following range of estimations: Li: 0.02 – 5.0 ppm, Ba, Sr: 0.5 – 20 ppm, Cs: 2–50 ppm, K,Na: 5–100 ppm. The detection limit obtained by this method for Li and Sr is lower than that obtained by the earlier carrier-distillation methods reported as well as other direct sensitive techniques of Zeidel and Avni for the analysis of Tho2. The precision of the method ranges from 8% for Cs to 17% for Ba. Volatilization studies on the choice of carrier material are presented.
