A gas sampling valve suitable for on-line injection of low pressure (< 0.5 torr) gas mixtures is described. Its advantages over the commercially available valves are enumerated. An error of < 3 per cent due to non-reproducibility in sample injection was observed. A simple arrangement of column and hot wire detector together with this valve enabled quantitative separation of CO and O2with a lower limit of ∼ 1 × 10−7moles for each component.

N-bondedtertiary-butyl isothiocyanate hydrolyzesviaa mechanism that differs from the normal, or S-bonded linkage isomer. The diminutive amount of published kinetic data for the former compound prompted a redetermination of the base-catalyzed rate of hydrolysis of the isothiocyanate in 2% dioxane, ethanol water mixtures at several temperatures using gas-liquid chromatography.

The gas chromatographic analysis of nitrogen bases and hydrocarbons formed during the hydrogenolysis of pyridine on a Co-Mo catalyst is described. Identified reaction products were ammonia,n-pentane,n-pentene-1,n-decane, N-methylpiperidine,n-pentylamine, piperidine,n-butanecarbonitrile, di-n-pentylamine and tri-n-pentylamine. Relative retention times of various reaction products on the following stationary phases are given: Carbowax 1000, OV-17, Pennwalt 223, and a mixture of Carbowax 1000 and Pennwalt 223.

A methylisobutyl ketone/formamide two-phase organic solvent system was utilized for the separation of thallium(III) from the elements Ga, In, Fe(III), Sn(II) and Sn(IV). The procedure involves a semi-selective extraction of the elements from an aqueous 2MHBr solution with methylisobutyl ketone followed by the complete separation of thallium from the other elements enumerated by stripping the ketone phase with a 1.5MHBr-formamide solution. Thallium was determined at 3776 Å by flame emission spectrometry.

A new colorimetric reagent for carbon monoxide is described. The reaction sequence apparently involves reduction by carbon monoxide of [PdCl4]2-, which then reduces [FeIIIEDTA]−to [FeIIEDTA]2-. The latter undergoes ligand exchange with 2,2′-dipyridyl or 1,10-phenanthroline to form the more stable colored [FeL3]2+, which is measured spectrophotometrically. Sodium molybdate enhances the overall reaction. The color intensity produced is non-linear but reproducible. The method is unique in that a soluble colored compound is produced rather than a metal sol.

The use of gas chromatography with flame photometric detection provides a convenient means of detecting sulfur-containing compounds in the gas phase of cigarette smoke. Application of the method casts doubt on currently held views about the composition of the sulfur-containing portion of smokes.

A sensitive fluorimetric method has been developed for the determination of nitrate based on the reduction of nitrate to nitrite with hydrazine sulfate and the subsequent determination of the nitrite formed with 2, 3-diaminonaphthalene. Solvent effect on fluorescence intensity, optimum reaction conditions, and sensitivity of the method are discussed.

The metal chelates of o-phenanthroline, a, a′-dipyridyl or bathophenanthroline were used as the ion exchanger in the liquid membrane of the perchlorate ion-selective electrode. The electrode with a nitrobenzene membrane containing tris(bathophenanthroline)ferrous perchlorate is the highest sensitive one and gives a linear Nernstian response up to about 1 × 10−5Mperchlorate. The membrane electrode having the ferrous ion-chelate of o-phenanthroline as an ion exchanger shows an excellent selectivity for perchlorate ion over nitrate or iodide Ion. The effects of the chelate concentration in the membrane and the central metal species of the chelate are examined on the electrode performance.
