An independent reference material inlet system for a mass spectrometer is described. A variable leak valve is utilized to control the flow rate of perfluorokerosene vapor into the source of a MS-902 mass spectrometer.

A colorimeter was fabricated from a helium-neon gas laser and a detector from an available spectrophotometer. The intensity and coherence of the laser light source permitted measuring a wide range of absorbances with monochromatic light. Neutral density filters were used to regulate the light intensity.

A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of arsenic, selenium, antimony and bismuth is described. These elements and their compounds are reduced to the corresponding hydride with sodium borohydride. The gaseous hydride is generated and collected by means of a generator fitted with a collapsible reservoir. The collected gases are subsequently introduced into an argon supported hydrogen flame and determined utilizing atomic absorption.

Secondary aliphatic amines give a blue color with sodium nitroprusside and acetaldehyde in aqueous solution at pH 10. A closely analogous reaction of N-nitrosamines has been discovered. Aliphatic N-nitrosamines can give a similar blue color with a secondary aliphatic amine, sodium pentacyanoaquoferrate (II) and acetaldehyde at pH 10. This suggests strongly that N-nitrosamines are intermediates in the corresponding nitroprusside reaction. The new reaction may also have some value as a color test for N-nitrosamines.

Thiothenoyltrifluoracetone (STTA) was used for the simultaneous extraction and direct spectrophotometric determination of bismuth at microgram concentration. About 98.5 μg of bismuth was extracted as the orange-red colored complex with 10 ml of 0.001MSTTA in carbontetrachloride. The extraction was quantitative at pH 6. The system conformed to Beer's Law in the concentration range of 2.5 to 30 μg/ml of bismuth at 460 nm. The method is both sensitive and selective.

UV-vis absorption spectroscopy provides sensitivein situmonitoring of chemical and physical properties of clay surfaces at various degrees of wetness,i.e.suspensions, slurries or dry films. Documented applications of the technique are discussed, including adsorption, protonation, and surface photolysis.

The mass spectrometric behavior of two isomeric hydroxy-salicylanilides, 3′-chloro-4′-(p-chlorophenoxy)-3-hydroxy-5-iodosalicylanilide and 3′-chloro-4′-(p-chlorophenoxy)-5-hydroxy-3-iodosalicylanilide, and their trimethylsilyl and boronate derivatives, is described. The parent compounds exhibit very similar spectra; however, the presence or absence of characteristic fragment ions in the spectra of the derivatives makes possible the differentiation of these isomers.

The conversion of nonvolatile amides to more volatile nitriles on a reactive column was studied. It was found that pyrophosphoric acid was necessary for the conversion, that the amide reacts 100% on the first 6 inches of the column to produce one nitrile and 3 carboxylic acid groups for every 4 amide groups injected and that a quantitative analytical procedure is possible.

An automatic potentiometric method for the determination of ammonia in boiler feed-waters is presented. An ammonium selective membrane electrode of the neutral carrier type was used as sensor-electrode. The accuracy and reproducibility were very good. The method allows a sample rate of 30 samples an hour.
