摘要:
We argue that optimization is an ideal theme on which to build a model‐building course. We describe a particular model, the cost of adjustment model in the theory of the firm, in some detail to illustrate the richness of optimal models.

摘要:
In this paper the topic known to biologists as population genetics is presented in terms of the Cartesian product. The gene, being a set of an ordered pair of elements (alleles), provides an example of a lattice in which the axes represent the composition of the gene in respective parents, and shows as co‐ordinates the possible genetic composition of individuals of the next generation with respect to that gene. When the axes are made to represent, respectively, the set of male and female parents of a population as a whole then it is the next generation as a whole that is represented by the co‐ordinates.

摘要:
The following is an account of a revision course given to first year science and engineering undergraduates at King's College, London. Group discussion, a programmed text and various films and demonstrations were used to ensure an informal teaching situation. As well as measuring student achievement by a multiple choice test, students were also asked to give their reactions to the course by filling in feedback sheets and an attitude questionnaire.

摘要:
Economists build dynamic models for studying cycles, forecasting, simulating alternative policies and generally understanding the structure of complicated systems. Mathematical, statistical and numerical methods are used for this kind of analysis and are described in this paper. This is just one aspect of the use of mathematical methods in economics, but it is one that is attracting increasing attention at the present time.
