摘要:
The calculator is not only a good computational tool but also an effective teaching and learning device in mathematics. The purpose of this article is to offer several examples, with a short list of references, to illustrate how the calculator can be used in the learning of three areas of mathematics: numbers, functions and equations.

摘要:
A list of 20 possible motives for doing a mathematics course was drawn up using the analysis of motivation given by Maslow. Responses from students reveal a generally low level of motivation and some significant changes between the anticipation in the sixth form and the reality of the university. The role of the teacher in improving motivation is discussed.

摘要:
Some recent results in number theory, discovered with electronic computers, are discussed in this paper. Central results, and results closely related to them, have been selected from the following areas: prime, composite, perfect numbers; distribution of primes, twin primes; Fermat's and Wilson's quotients; Fibonacci and pseudo‐Fibonacci numbers; and zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Many open questions, unsolved problems, and conjectures in these areas are mentioned. By discussing some of the recent computer‐established results in number theory, this paper illustrates the tremendous impact of computers on pure mathematical research.

摘要:
Problem‐solving experience should be an integral part of a student's mathematical experience at whatever level he may be. We describe such a situation which requires little more than an elementary knowledge of linear functions, and can be developed, with suitable prompting by the teacher, towards ideas which usually come much later. Most of the description is, for the sake of brevity, mathematical; the didactical strategy should, however, be clear by implication.

摘要:
The storage problem for infinite reservoirs where annual inflows are distributed as independent gamma variables is treated in this paper. After having determined the distribution of the water content in the reservoir under consideration for a given period, an attempt was made to derive the expressions for the first four moments of the surplus and deficit, and then to approximate their distributions by the Type I curve using the Pearson criterion. The expected value of the range was also derived, and its variance was approximated by a linear equation of the reservoir life. Finally, the distribution of the range was approximated by the Type III curve.
