摘要:
The article presents a simple method for generating infinitely many means of two arbitrarily chosen positive numbersx<y.Each suitable process for decomposing the interval [x,y], together with any suitable process for averaging numbers, determines a mean ofxand y. These means include many of the well‐known ones, and are equal to various averages of the identity function. The method is used to yield simple proofs of some familiar inequalities.

摘要:
The need to facilitate the construction of Numerical Analysis coursework assignments that are apt for enhancing the student's appreciation of the subject, led to the development of four major CAL programs for use in computer oriented courseworks. These programs have a dynamic nature which renders them useful in all practical learning situations and, from experiments performed thus far, they have proved to be instrumental in advancing the student's knowledge as well as aiding the lecturer to set suitable assignments. Following is a discussion of the program characteristics and their implications. Sample output from the programs is also included.

The authors have two programs, written initially for the BBC Acorn B microcomputer, which they have used in the teaching of the binomial distribution and the Central Limit Theorem. These programs are discussed here in detail, together with an indication of their possible use in the classroom situation.

摘要:
This article takes a new look at the well known problem concerning the probability that the three lengths obtained when a line segment is subjected to two random cuts will form a triangle. The approach taken provides us with illustrations of the distribution of simple order statistics, the maximum and minimum of two random variables, examples of marginal and joint distributions and, in particular, the construction of a conceptually simple trivariate singular distribution.
