摘要:
Numerical methods are of considerable value to the chemist and they are becoming increasingly common in mathematics courses at an undergraduate level. When used to solve chemical problems, their inclusion in the course presents a valuable opportunity to develop problem‐solving skills. The present paper considers the main elements of computational chemistry problems and shows how these can be used to formulate the problems mathematically. Techniques that are useful in devising an appropriate solution are also considered. The discussion is illustrated by many examples which should be of interest to both mathematicians and chemists.

摘要:
There are many fundamentalists in mathematics education who are ardent supporters of the ‘back to basics’ movement. They strongly suggest that all students should go back to regimented rote learning patterns to develop computational skills. To openly endorse these kinds of classroom practices is tantamount to granting permission for a full‐scale radical, if not surgical, lobectomy for the right hemisphere of the brains of today's youths.

In this article we explore some of the basic concepts of management of renewable resources. The idea of maximum sustainable yield is described and growth models are explored. Harvesting effort is introduced and bionomic equilibrium, where costs are equated to revenue, is obtained for an open access resource.

摘要:
120 pupils in years 1 to 5 from two grammar schools were interviewed using specially prepared tasks to study the variety of interpretations given to letters by adolescents. The results indicate that two distinct conceptual understandings of the role played by a letter in relation to geometrical data exist in pupils’ thinking. The two usages correspond respectively to an interpretation of the letter as an adjunct to conventional arithmetical symbols, and to the letter interpreted as an algebraic entity.

摘要:
Recognizing the necessity of making students more aware of the usefulness of their mathematical knowledge and better able to apply it, an approach toward these goals encompassing four objectives was developed. The approach seeks to stimulate interest in mathematics by enabling the student to use his knowledge in a non‐trivial application while discovering for himself the ideas that gave rise to the concept employed. An example of how the approach was implemented is presented with an assessment of the results as measured by student reactions.

摘要:
The formal application of the Fourier integral transform is shown to give rise to divergent integrals in the solution of Flamant's problem of the classical theory of elasticity. To avoid the occurrence of such divergent integrals, a second generalized Fourier transform is proposed and made use of (the first one in this area is due to Golecki [1]). This second generalization to the Fourier transform is the appropriate one for attacking elastostatic boundary value problems through the representation, due to Sneddon [2], of the displacement vector in terms of harmonic functions instead of through Airy's stress function.

The effects of non‐examples on the acquisition of the geometrical concept of semi‐regular polyhedra were examined. Three treatment groups (eight examples only, four examples followed by four non‐examples, four pairs, each pair consisting of an example and a closely related non‐example) viewed a video‐taped presentation. The criterion measure was a 20‐item dichotomously‐scored post‐test. Results favoured the treatments containing both examples and non‐examples. However, the order of presentation of the non‐examples appeared to be negligible.

摘要:
The water content in a reservoir allowing neither spillage nor emptiness during its design life was investigated for the case where the annual inflows are distributed as independent gamma variables, and the annual outflows are equal to the sample meani After the exact distribution of the water content was obtained, the formulae for computing its moments were provided. The expected values of the maximum amount of water in surplus, the maximum amount of water in deficit, and the storage capacity of the reservoir were also derived.
