摘要:
The systems approach to teaching is briefly discussed and then applied to teaching undergraduate calculus. The implementation procedure, specifications of the learning units, programme of study and experimentation, and the various types of expenses are also outlined.

The relationship between complex variable theory and harmonic functions is well known. Two algebras related to complex algebra apply to simple hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations.

摘要:
One of the problems many students encounter when they first come to university is that they do not have some of the basic mathematical knowledge and/or skills which are needed to facilitate the effective learning of their first year courses. This paper describes a scheme of diagnosis and remedial work, consisting of a multiple choice pre‐knowledge test and certain books and programmed materials, some of them specially written for the purpose. Certain knowledge gaps and their causes were identified and the effectiveness of the remedial materials and procedures were evaluated. It was concluded that students found the scheme useful and that they profited from it, and that the role played by tutors in discussing the results of the pre‐knowledge test was of fundamental importance.

摘要:
The development of computer technology during the last twenty years has made it possible to cautiously explore the concepts of thinking, learning and intelligence in terms of the computer. This paper investigates similarities and differences between the computer and the human brain in terms of thought processes and develops the theory that the computer can learn, is intelligent and does satisfy educational learning requirements.

摘要:
The concept of school curriculum in science and mathematics is discussed and related to the structures of the disciplines and theory developments. Recent epistemological studies on theory dynamics (Kuhn, Sneed) are put into context with the understanding of learning processes. In this way deeper relations between the subjective and the objective aspects of the development of knowledge can be exhibited. The considerations include the social dimensions of scientific knowledge and growth. It is pointed out that these dimensions have to be adequately incorporated into the school curricula in order to improve both cognitive and social learning.

摘要:
Attention is drawn to an ancient Greek method of finding the least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers. A link is established between this method and a well‐known method of obtaining the highest common factor (HCF) of these numbers. This leads to a consideration of some relationships between HCF and LCM of two or more numbers. The work is interpreted in the context of the contemporary school mathematics curriculum and suggestions are offered for classroom exercises.

摘要:
Elementary calculus may be taught as a theory of real functions on the real line. It is then natural to introduce symbols for composition and for the identity function. But there is a general hesitation to do this. The reason is that most applications of calculus actually deal with real functions on a one‐dimensional manifold, and with their differentials. This paper shows how the scalars and differentials of tensor analysis may be presented at this level. The resulting theory is not only simple to understand, but is necessary in order to make any sense out of elementary calculus.

摘要:
This paper describes an approach to the problem of teaching first year tertiary level mathematics students who have widely varying levels of achievement and ability in mathematics. The evaluation of some aspects of the proposed solution to the problem is based on a semantic differential and a Likert‐type questionnaire.
