摘要:
This article describes a simple and relatively inexpensive teaching situation designed to introduce 11‐12#fr1/2> year‐olds informally to some fundamental concepts of two‐dimensional vector space. The ‘game’ situation in which the structure is embedded results from attempts to provide an approach which is at once interesting to children and acceptable to their teachers.

摘要:
The problems of creating links between science and mathematics in secondary school teaching are discussed and some suggestions are made towards possible solutions. Ideas developed during a course attended by teachers of mathematics and science are outlined. Particular examples are given of the kind of material thought useful in aiding students develop an understanding of mathematics through concrete work in science.

摘要:
In this first paper it is shown that during the mid‐1870's when chemistry finally broke free from the shackles of its alchemical past, a process of gradual mathematization ensued. This process has continued apace and at present appears to be accelerating. This has brought attendant difficulties and a plea is made for a better mathematical training for chemists. At the moment applications of linear algebra appear to have special relevance to chemistry and it is pointed out that improved mathematical skills in this area may well result in a reformulation of chemistry within the framework of some appropriate logical structures. Modern theoretical chemistry could perhaps be founded on the theory of sets, or even on the theory of categories, if a higher order of abstraction is called for.

摘要:
In this paper Mendelian genetics is reinterpreted in terms of mathematics. The gene in many living things ‐‐ but in by no means all of them ‐‐ is here viewed as an ordered pair of elements (called alleles), and each offspring as an element of a Cartesian product. The paper illustrates how this view provides a means of presenting both instances of classical Mendelian inheritance and also special cases of inheritance.

摘要:
In the study of fundamental properties of algorithms, attention is often given to classes of abstract general procedures. Of these, the Markov algorithm has some claims to favour owing to the simplicity of its semantics, the relative power of its basic operations and its independence of numerical concepts. Such a study will generally be assisted by some practical experience in using the methods introduced.
