摘要:
In this paper we outline means by which mathematics students at Oxford Polytechnic are encouraged to develop communication skills. We describe our experience of a scheme designed to provide students with an opportunity to practise oral skills; this requires them presenting their final year projects to an audience of their peers and staff.

摘要:
Because past research often highlights the problems of mathematics education, case studies of exemplary teachers were conducted in order to emphasize positive aspects and to stimulate and improve mathematics education. Observations of two primary mathematics teachers nominated as exemplary by their peers provided some marked contrasts. One teacher subscribed to a constructivist philosophy, provided students with opportunities for active mental engagement and had an energetic monitoring style which ensured high levels of time on task. The other teacher emphasized whole‐class activities and gave students limited opportunities to learn in meaningful ways. This teacher's style, however, was undergoing changes which were facilitated by the support of the researchers.

摘要:
A very simple, pedagogical procedure to calculate matrix elements between configurations for electronic operators is developed. It consists of representing typical non‐vanishing matrix elements between products of spin orbitals by means of suitable diagrams. The matrix elements between Slater determinants are easily found through permutation of the lines in these diagrams.

摘要:
This paper is divided into two distinct but connected parts. In the first one we look for the best approach to the Mathematics teaching of the future engineer. This approach should have an eminently pragmatic character and should be directed towards teaching engineers to know and manage Mathematics at a tool. In the second part we illustrate how a collaboration with industry can be obtained from this kind of teaching.

摘要:
The standard definition of information is introduced and it is shown using elementary methods that given three basic properties that the. measure of information must satisfy, there is only one possible definition. The main properties of entropy are introduced, again using elementary calculus and a particular example is given which connects entropy with an uncertainty principle. The various cases are considered using the theory of convergence of infinite

摘要:
The well‐known Chi‐square test can be used to determine whether the difference in two rates is statistically significant, and if so, at what level of significance. This paper discusses the related question of how large a difference in rates must be (when one rate is held constant) in order to show statistical significance at a given level of significance. An illustrative example, adapted from data appearing in the biostatistical literature, is provided.
