Some form of approximation may be required when real numbers are represented decimally and when the standard arithmetic operations are performed on them. The usual methods of taking more thanndigits, performing the calculations and then truncating or rounding the result tondigits do not always give the correct final digit.

摘要:
Mathematics courses for science and engineering undergraduates should aim to develop an enquiring and creative approach to mathematics together with good communication skills. Due to their versatility, computational power and graphical capabilities, computers can play a significant role in developing these skills. This paper describes a project in which the use of computer packages was integrated into the curriculum of several science and engineering courses. An evaluative study found that this resulted in more emphasis being placed on investigative work, more mathematical discussion and better student understanding of some concepts.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of using calculators with and without guided instruction on the mathematical achievement of remedial seventh‐grade students. Thirty‐seven seventh‐grade students in three classes were assigned to three treatment groups. The experimental groups were taught the regular math curriculum and allowed to use calculators, but only one of these groups received instructions on how calculators can assist in some of the lessons. The control group was taught using paper and pencil. Treatment for all three groups lasted two quarters or 18 weeks. The results of this study revealed that there was no significant difference in mathematical achievement in test or quarter grades between the three groups. Calculators do not appear to harm achievement levels, but the treatment group given calculators without the practical instruction in their use displayed lower test and quarter means than the other two groups. Implications for remedial classroom use and future research were discussed.

摘要:
We provide an elementary and short proof of the following important result: Let A be annxnreal or complex matrix. Then {Am} converges if and only the following two conditions hold: (a) if A is an eigenvalue of A, then either A = 1 or A lies in the open unit disk of the complex plane; and (b) if 1 is an eigenvalue of A, then its algebraic multiplicity equals its geometric multiplicity. Unlike the standard proofs of this result, our proof requires no knowledge of Jordan canonical forms. In addition, the proof provides students with an example of the interplay between matrix techniques and vector space theory.

An interesting set of sequences arise from a study of the ratios of denominator quotients in the continued fraction expansions of quadratic irrationals. One can utilize the behaviour of these sequences to specify tight bounds on the errors in the best rational approximation to these irrationals.
