摘要:
Various ways in which Hilbert transforms arise are identified, contrasted and illustrated with examples from the literature. In particular the role of symmetry is highlighted and some interpretations are offered of behaviour in specific instances, such as those relating Hilbert transforms and generalized functions.

摘要:
A methodology is presented which provides the basis for evaluating the structural response of building components, which are subjected to a complex temperature distribution, normally of the curvilinear form resulting from transient heat conduction through the thickness. An equivalent linear temperature distribution is equated by means of axial and moment equilibrium considerations. The concept is applied initially to homogeneous materials where the use of Lagrange polynomial interpolation permits explicit solutions for the equivalent thermal parameters. This formulation also leads to the optimization of sampling points for experimental measurement by the establishment of a Gauss point rule. Secondly a spreadsheet formulation is developed for the numerical solutions of more complex problems, which has utility for analysis of the response of multilayer composite constructions or scenarios where material properties are temperature dependent.

摘要:
All students taking Applicable Mathematics as one of their subjects on the Combined Studies degree take a one week modelling exercise in their first year. The general organization of the modelling work is described together with one particular exercise. This particular exercise was based on the computing experience of one of the authors and involves both summarizing data and advising on decisions to be made on the basis of the data.

摘要:
The extension of 2D interactive graphics systems for geometric constructing in secondary schools through tools for interactive calculations on geometric configurations provides, from a didactic point of view, an opportunity for reflection and analysis. In this article the qualities will be presented which an interactive tool for calculating in planimetry could and should possess. With reference to examples the functioning of a prototype calculation module (calculation module of Cabri‐géomètre) will be described. A first evaluation will be made of the didactic potentialities involved and finally special and general problems of the use of such tools will be discussed.
