摘要:
Mathematics and science tutors from the School of Education, University of East Anglia have since 1978 been involved in INSET programmes which includes meeting teachers and children in their own schools. Such school‐based in‐service work is demanding for all concerned. It involves making sensitive judgements, often instantly, about relationships between teachers, pupils, heads, and LEA staff. This is especially so in mathematics and science where so many people feel inadequate. Tutors involved in teacher training should consider their professional experience lacking if it does not include recent school‐based in‐service education because the work brings a new dimension to courses which are based at Schools or Colleges of Education.

摘要:
The negative attitude of medical undergraduates towards statistics could be ascribed to adherance to traditional statistical topics, foreign to the medical sciences. The need is to teach in a medical language. This communication describes the change needed in style and content of teaching to implement this strategy. The medical topics are identified and the details of teaching specified. A discussion on normal values, their clinical significance, diagnostic criteria, and choice of diagnosis provides opportunity to teach measures of location and dispersion, distributions, type I and II errors, and some probability. Interpretation of laboratory results and of medical literature brings out essentials of sampling, some aspects of design and meaning of P‐values.

摘要:
Attention is focused on one particular aim of mathematics education: the fostering of an appreciation of the unified and integrated nature of mathematics. To clarify this aim the concepts of the integrated nature of mathematics and its appreciation are analysed in some detail. Appreciation of the unity of mathematics is understood to combine knowledge of integration within mathematics and the possession of a particular problem‐solving ability: integrative skill. A definition of an integrative problem or task is proposed. Subsequently integrative skill is defined in terms of success at integrative tasks.
