On the equivalence of ‘experimental’ and ‘correlational’ statistics |

Wright, Ayton, and Fowler have noted that the use of either experimental or correlational statistics on a data set would lead to the same conclusions. In fact, the similarity is even more fundamental than the authors suggest, since both experimental and correlational statistics are derived from the general linear model. It can be shown, for example, that the t‐test and the point‐biserial correlation coefficient are mathematically equivalent. Several simple equations are given which demonstrate the relationship between experimental and correlational statistics. Finally, it is emphasized that properly choosing a statistical technique is dependent on what question is being asked.

摘要:
A discrete time branching process is considered in which the offspring distribution alternates between two known probability distributions. There are two cases to consider, depending on which of the probability distributions initiates the process. It is shown, both graphically and analytically that for any pair of distributions, the probability of ultimate extinction is reduced if the process with the smaller individual probability of extinction starts first. An example is given in the case when the offspring distribution alternates between two geometric distributions.

The Sylvester matrix equation AX+ XB = C is important in several branches of science and technology. It occurs, for example, as an ‘auxiliary equation’ to some of the differential equations of control theory. The method used here is based on the technique developed by Lacoss and Shakal. However, the formula given below is much more general than that of Lacoss and Shakal and deals with the case in which their formula fails.

摘要:
A heuristic description of a personal learning experience in a LOGO micro‐world is given. The figures produced by the familiar POLY procedure are generalized, and an attempt is made to develop a workable definition and a useful classification. It depicts the gradual evolution of relevant mathematical concepts, and the part intuition played in this process. Moreover, it shows mathematics both as a process of discovery and creative work, illustrating the difference between the final product and the untidy processes used to arrive there.

摘要:
First year mathematics degree students at Leicester Polytechnic attend a course in mathematical modelling. The aim is to introduce the students to mathematical modelling concepts and to model development. Work is set and marked during the course and this forms a vital part of the students' assessment. In addition to this, however, the students are assessed by means of a three hour examination at the end of the year. This examination is significantly different from the normal ‘five out of eight’ type. The philosophy and organization of the examination are discussed in this paper. An example of a particular examination, that for June 1986, is included as an appendix to illustrate the points made in the discussion.

We present and prove a proposition which defines a recurrence relation for computing, a priori, multipliers that are valid for any set partitioning problem. We further use the relation to establish a constructive method for estimating the size of set partitioning problem that can be completely aggregated on a given computer. The size largely depends on the number of rows of the problem. We also present some computational results.
