摘要:
A solution to the menage problem is given through the use of largest rook polynomials. These are rook polynomials whose coefficients have greatest sums which turn out to be Fibonacci numbers, while the sums of the coefficients of the rook polynomial for the reduced ménage problem are Lucas numbers.

摘要:
Some known examples from the literature are used to offer a point of view that could integrate different geometries and blend several topics, which have important applications both in higher mathematics and other disciplines, appropriately with those that are often discussed in a standard High School Curriculum. The aim is to make these topics, more attractive and understandable to students in grades 9‐12 in a way that reinforces logical thinking with visual understanding obtained through computer usage. In this process, students not only learn the materials better, but also gain the ability of making conjectures while exploring the computer screen This could add some spice to teaching and make it more enjoyable for students.

摘要:
This paper presents a historical development of wavelet transforms, Gabor transforms and their myriad of mathematical, physical, medical, biological, and engineering applications. The use of Fourier transforms and the Hilbert space formalism in the wavelet transform analysis is briefly discussed. Special emphasis is given to the discovery of multiresolution analysis and its remarkable impact on the development of the theory and applications of wavelets and new computational algorithms in numerical analysis.

摘要:
A Pythagorean triple is called digits reversed if one integer in the triple has the same digits but in an inverse order with another. Some properties and many new examples of such triples are obtained. These results present a typical elementary example showing that new flowers are growing on the old mathematical land.

摘要:
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, through its Excellence in Education Program, has sponsored a number of collaborative efforts involving schools and higher education institutions in the United States. One of these, Mathematics Pathways, involved a local university and community college working together with the school system to bring about improvements in the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels. The work involving teachers and students from schools has been particularly productive. Students involved in the Mathematics Pathways project have shown significant improvement in mathematics as compared with students not involved in the project. The collaborations have proved to be beneficial to all participants.

摘要:
This paper examines issues relevant to the development, implementation and evaluation of educational software in Mathematics, in the particular context of a Mathwise module covering the topic of complex numbers. This computer‐based module has been implemented among students at the University of Paisley. Results of an evaluation exercise are presented and some conclusions are drawn on issues of design and implementation.

摘要:
Mathematical modelling is applied to solve the problem of reliably lifting, with an electromagnetic robot gripper, a specified number of thin industrial transformer laminations at once from a pallet. Magnetic circuit analysis using a linear model has led to closed‐form solutions of the flux flow pattern and the net lifting force on each lamination in the stack. Compared to a finite element analysis approach, the analytical solutions are easier to interpret and have enabled general conclusions to be made about the performance of the robot gripper. An extension of the method to account for the non‐linear, magnetic saturation characteristics of the transformer laminations is also given.

摘要:
The concept of zero is presented. The origin, notation and early uses of zero are described. Zero was known to the Sumerians and used by the Mayas. Greeks may have been aware of the zero concept, but they never interpreted it as a number. The introduction of zero into arithmetic is attributed to the Hindu mathematician, astronomer and poet Brahmagupta in the 7th century AD. Zero was taken over from the Hindus by the Arabs and transferred by them into Europe. An important link between the Hindu‐Arabic number system and the European mathematics is Italian mathematician Fibonacci. The vacuum problem is also discussed and its relationship with zero. Some uses of zero in mathematics (e.g. the infinitesimal method, Dirac delta function, binary number system, binary matrices), physics (e.g. origin of the Universe, laws of thermodynamics, zero temperature), chemistry (e.g. chemical equilibrium in reversible thermodynamics, quantum numbers) and biology (e.g. origin of life, biological clock) are presented. Several interesting and every‐day uses of zero are singled out and it is stressed that the mathematization of natural sciences was possibly only after zero was established as a number.
