摘要:
This centennial tribute commemorates Einstein the Man and Einstein the Scientist. A brief account of his great character and his remarkable scientific contributions is presented in recognition of the unique, man—scientist duality of Einstein. This article is an expanded version of the first author's lecture delivered at the Birth Centenary Symposium of Albert Einstein held in the S. N. Bose Institute of Physical Sciences, University of Calcutta in July 1978.

It is convenient to define (x/a) = cose u and (y/b) = sine u, where u denotes the angle. This approach exploits the similarity between elliptic trigonometry and plane trigonometric functions. Next, the applications of elliptic trigonometry to Laplace transformation and elementary calculus are given.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to test the assumption that preservice elementary teachers need concrete experience with manipulative aids to demonstrate numerical, structural, and algorithmic properties of arithmetic operations. Thirty‐six students in the experimental group used manipulative aids to work laboratory exercises while thirty‐three students in the control group completed the same exercises without the use of these materials. Dependent measures included achievement scores, interview data, and attitude scores.

In this paper we explain the construction of an arbitrary non‐Newtonian calculus from two given complete ordered fields. We then discuss some features of a few specific non‐Newtonian calculi. And finally we speculate as to the eventual use of the non‐Newtonian calculi as alternatives to the classical calculus of Newton and Leibniz.

摘要:
The multinomial theorem and a basic property of multinomial coefficients yield a way of counting the number of chains of coloured beads of a fixed length where each colour can be used repeatedly. This coupled with a simple counting argument forms a concise proof of Fermat's theorem.

摘要:
This paper describes how profiling techniques can be applied to Basic programs on a small minicomputer without backing store. The first section describes the purposes of program profiling, considers alternative and complementary techniques that have been used, and the reasons for providing profiling facilities for Basic. The paper then describes how the system was implemented on a Data General Nova 1220 computer. When a program is run under the system, in addition to its ordinary printout, a report is produced which shows how many times each line was executed, how many times each possible route was taken at IF and ON statements, and the details of the usage of each FOR loop. All the stages of the processing are illustrated using a simple example. The additional computer time and space required by the profiling system are examined with reference to data gathered from the analysis of 16 programs.
