摘要:
A course in calculus, based on the availability of a personal computer, is discussed. Whilst finding considerable benefit in terms of student acceptance, the author draws attention to some problems and challenges inherent in this approach.

摘要:
The place of simulation in teaching mathematical modelling has been advocated previously by a number of authors. It is argued here that the skill of integrating simulation and analytical investigation of physical systems in a mutually supportive way is necessary and valuable for the practising applied mathematician. A module, included in a course on systems theory, designed to help students to develop this skill is described. The necessity of having an accessible system simulation package, which is easy to learn and use, available to the students is emphasized.

摘要:
As part of a CAL project in Limerick, a five‐hour course that teaches basic matrix algebra was developed using the Tutorial Lesson Model (TLM) available on the Control Data microcomputer‐based PLATO system. This paper describes the course, its development, and testing, and then considers some of the issues that arose. In particular, the shortcomings of the system and their implications for future CAL work in Limerick are discussed.

摘要:
This paper considers the state of the art in the field of mathematical education of engineers and is based on short investigatory visits to institutions in Belgium, Denmark and The Netherlands. Particular emphasis is directed towards the role of the microcomputer and mathematical modelling, as well as to the emerging role of discrete mathematics. Developments in all three areas appear fragmentary and a proposal for closer collaboration is made. Concern is expressed regarding the pressure experienced in some institutions to reduce the curriculum time devoted to mathematics in order to make way for the teaching of some new engineering techniques, which may well become obsolete within a short time. In order to ensure that future engineers possess the fundamental knowledge essential to meet the demands of tomorrow's technology, a request is made for an urgent reappraisal of the position of mathematics in engineering education.

摘要:
This paper aims to show how mathematical modelling exercises which involve large quantities of data can now be run with ease with students who are unwilling or unable to write computer programs. This opens up these types of coursework to students on business studies and other courses, and complements well the existing work they do on communication studies and information analysis.

摘要:
Previously developed conditions for absolute convergence of certain multiple Mellin‐Barnes contour integrals representing multivariable //‐functions are applied here to analogous integral representations for various Horn and other generalized hypergeometric functions recently discussed by O. P. Tandon. Evaluation of each of the predicted integrals is carried out in terms of the predicted function to which is added another generalized hypergeometric function, thus correcting each of Tandon's conjectures.

摘要:
The Mathematics in Society Project (MISP) began in 1980 as an international association of mathematics educators in three continents. The main purpose of MISP is the writing of innovative secondary school mathematics courses based on a new conception of mathematics itself. The starting point for MISP was the fact that mathematics in school is found to be difficult and unpleasant by the great majority of pupils, but mathematics in society is widely diffused and used implicitly by most people. MISP therefore sees mathematics as a ‘living body’ representing all its uses (implicit and explicit) in society, in contrast to the ‘skeleton’ concept of mathematics which has led to such failure in schools. The gradual development of this new conception is informally analysed in the style of Kuhn and Lakatos.
