摘要:
An iterative procedure for adjusting examination marks from papers of varying standards has been given by P. N. Murgatroyd. This paper shows that his procedure is equivalent to ‘Kuiper iteration’, which is commonly used in the analysis of blocked experiments. The convergence of the procedure is demonstrated and attention is drawn to an underlying linear model.

摘要:
The paper considers the well‐aired problem of the seller of a single‐issue evening newspaper who has to decide how many copies to order each day. A mathematical model is constructed, and solved with the aid of material normally covered near the start of courses in probability and statistics. The author's concern is, not so much to encourage paper‐sellers to make more profit, as to help pupils, through their teachers, to see some purpose in their early statistical studies. Suggestions are made for extending the basic problem to provide topics for further study as pupils become better acquainted with the subject.

摘要:
This note is concerned with the sequential probability ratio test (S.P.R.T.) for testing hypotheses about the unknown parameter of the one‐parameter exponential family of distributions. Formulae are obtained for the equations of the stopping boundaries and the operating characteristics (O.C) and average sample number (A.S.N.) functions.

摘要:
An iterative procedure is described for determining the lateral deflection of beams and of infinitely long, finite‐width plates under a prescribed loading. The accuracy of the method is generally expected to be better than that of the linear theory where the Bernoulli‐Euler equation is solved. The assumptions made in the procedure are that the moment curvature relationship obeys the Bernoulli‐Euler theorem, that the properties of the material do not vary throughout the entire loading history, that Hooke's law is valid, and that the spatial derivative of the deflection of any point is less than unity. An important feature of the iterative method is that it reduces the original non‐linear equation to a sequence of determinate problems involving only ordinary linear, second‐order equations for the deflection for a prescribed loading condition.

摘要:
It seems to the author that this paper does approach the question of individualized learning and curriculum development materials in a somewhat pragmatic and unusual way and it incorporates a number of ideas which he thinks any serious curriculum project must consider in relation to individualized learning.

摘要:
Mathieu and Hill's differential equations are shown to be very useful in the field of practical and theoretical phenomena associated with non‐linear time‐varying oscillating circuits. These equations are solved for various phenomena involving saw‐tooth variations, rectangular ripples and exponential variations, under the phenomenological aspects of Green's functions for a dynamical system.

The arrival simultaneously at one point on a motorway of more cars than there are lanes will result in a collision. Situations leading to this are analysed using a simple model so that critical configurations can be identified and preventive action taken.

摘要:
The theory of canonical transformations can be developed without the use of generating functions, and is perhaps to be preferred as this approach is closer to the study of tensor analysis with which most students are familiar. The explicit general condition for a transformation to be canonical is exploited in proving that such transformations have Jacobian +1. As well, invariance properties of certain types of integrals in phase space are proved in a similar manner, all without reference to generating functions.
