摘要:
In this study error patterns and areas of difficulty in several problem‐solving tasks are isolated for a group of bilingual Hispanic technical college students. The results of tests covering reading speed and comprehension, arithmetic computation, algebraic manipulations and word problems suggest two major areas of difficulty, namely problem‐solving speed and expressing word problems in mathematical terminology. Examples are given which illustrate how several errors made in translating problems into mathematical terminology derive from misinterpreting problems. It is argued that traditional methods for teaching problem solving may not be very effective for Hispanics such as those in this study. Suggestions for modifications are given which address the specific needs of these students.

摘要:
Algorithms are developed for determining the coordinates of a position in three‐dimensional space with a minimum number of measurements. They are especially useful for underwater acoustic telemetry applications, such as navigation systems for divers or submersible vehicles, in which positions are calculated with respect to a long‐baseline array of fixed hydrophones or transponders on the seabed. The theory is applicable to any array configuration, and requires very simple programming for computer implementation.

摘要:
In this paper, a new approach in Visual Geometry called Dissection‐Motion‐Geometry is presented. Certain patterns of dissecting polygonal regions in the plane are introduced. Emphasis is laid onrectangulationandderectangulationof polygonal regions. As such, theshape‐wise transformof polygonal regions in the plane into rectangular regions (under thearea equivalence condition)is presented. This transform will cover triangular regions, convex or non‐convex quadrilaterial regions, andregular n‐gon regions, and is treated in § 3 of this paper. Further, the original polygonal region and the area equivalent rectangular region in each case will be shown as piece‐wise congruent under an additional condition (alinear relationbetween corresponding sides of the two regions), to the areaequivalencecondition. In §5 the transform will be generalized and henceeverypolygonal region in the plane is transformable into a rectangular region ofequal area;the linear condition will be removed. Consequently, two polygonal regions of equal areas are piece‐wise congruent. Throughout these transforms, new techniques will be introduced. In § 4, however, is an application of the piece‐wise congruence operation through which certain area formulae are derived via a rather straightforward yet surprising fashion.

摘要:
A mathematical model of spatial interaction in geography is translated into complex variables so that a map of a small region is represented by part of the complex plane, with a function of a complex variable used to represent vectorially the net interactive ‘force’ at any point due to the presence of a finite set of points of attraction. The zeros of this function represent equilibrium points of the force field in the region and can be obtained by writing a computer program in complex variables.

摘要:
Students enter our first‐year classes with a considerable diversity of mathematical skills. We have introduced a multi‐level entry scheme for first‐year engineering mathematics. Student discontinuance has been reduced from nearly 50 per cent (which is typical of similar courses in Australia) to 20 per cent. The remedial component is semi‐self‐paced and requires 80 per cent mastery. No extra resources have been required, and there has been an overall increase in the standard of the course.

This paper is concerned with the construction of sum and product tables for Galois fieldsGF(q)in whichqis a power of a prime numberp.Sufficient elementary theory is presented to provide a basis for the development of methods of representation, addition and multiplication for the field elements of GF(q).The methods are oriented towards the use of operations from the prime field GF(p)that are easy to define and implement in terms of modulo‐Parithmetic. They lead to a compact form of representation for the field elements and to simply applied procedures for the construction of the sum and product tables. Examples of the methods and procedures proposed are given throughout, and sum and product tables are given for Galois fieldsGF(q)whenqhas values up to 27.

摘要:
Two of the most frequently taught discrete probability distributions, the binomial and the hypergeometric, are presented in a comparable form that highlights both their similar structure and their distinguishing feature. Since these two random variables can equally be decomposed into sums of indicator variables, their expectations are simultaneously computed by the law of addition. That law is further utilized to simplify the calculation of the expectation of the number of runs in a random binary sequence. The same rationale is extended to two‐dimensional lattices.
