This study investigated relationships among four variables: two teacher variables, critical thinking ability and frequency of oral expressions of logic; and two student variables, critical thinking ability and geometry achievement. Data were secured from geometry classes using audiotape recordings to tabulate teachers' frequency of oral expression of logic, and from standardized tests as measures of critical thinking ability and geometry achievement. Conclusions included a positive relationship between teachers' critical thinking ability and teachers' frequency of oral expressions of logic, and between students' critical thinking ability and students' geometry achievement. Teachers' critical thinking ability and teachers' frequency of oral expressions of logic were not found to be related to students' or class critical thinking ability, or to students' or class geometry achievement.

Models (in the sense of paradigms or archetypes) of the processes involved in mathematical modelling have been proposed by a number of authors. Many of these models have common features and a consensus is emerging. One stage of the modelling process is the formulation of a mathematical model from the original real problem situation. This paper concentrates on the role of the particular symbolic representation chosen for the mathematical model and points out the far‐reaching effects that notation may have for the complete modelling process.

Some imprecisions have been discovered in an algorithm proposed by Wilson for reducing the magnitude of coefficients in zero‐one linear inequalities. Two propositions are presented to clarify these imprecisions, with illustrations to demonstrate their effect.

This paper describes a course given during one term within the second year of a mathematics degree programme. Although it occupies only 25 hours it makes a distinctive contribution to the education of the students because it relies on their active cooperation and because it opens up a large number of real situations to their investigation.

The teaching of elementary calculus during the last twenty‐five years in the United States is comparable to the development of the calculus. The development of the calculus and the teaching of calculus share a similar background in that both are characterized by periods of time in which ideas slowly accumulate, awaiting the arrival of some person, who will, with a new method of discovery, synthesize the fragmentary pieces and lift the subject to a higher plane.

A concept of memory of a probability distribution is defined consistent with the fact that zero memory corresponds to memoryless processes. Using this concept some new twists to some old paradoxes are discussed. An application is also suggested.
