摘要:
Sampling methods in electrical engineering set forth a parallel between the inner product of two functions and the ordinary scalar product of two vectors; this similarity can be exploited to enable students to recognize the connection between the two concepts.

摘要:
A strategy game is presented that is strongly connected to the classical ‘eight queens problem’ for checkerboards. Two different versions of the game are analysed with computer assistance. The algorithm for this analysis is developed in terms of a general game model. Thus it can be used, at least in principal, for any two‐person strategy game.

摘要:
This article is an attempt to analyse and explain a well‐known card‐trick in terms of a simple mathematical model, suitable at high‐school level. It conveys some of the key aspects of modelling such as symbolization, generalization, descriptive or predictive capabilities, as well as experimental verification.

摘要:
Little hard evidence exists to support the contention that college remedial mathematics programs do indeed help students remove or remedy their deficiencies. The purpose of this study was to determine for remedial students the differential effects of two instructional modes centering around, respectively, (1) small‐group instructional processes (experimental), and (2) lecture‐demonstration processes (control). These effects were investigated in relation to (1) academic achievement, (2) attitude toward mathematics, and (3) sex difference. A total of 171 subjects participated in the main study. A 2 x 2 factorial analysis of covariance was employed to test the main hypotheses. Data from attitude and achievement scores were subjected to ranking and the Kendall tau (t) test of association was employed. The results of this study indicated the small‐group instructional procedures had a significantly greater positive impact (P<0‐001) on achievement in arithmetic, elementary algebra, and combined arithmetic and algebra than the lecture‐dmonstration method. Sex difference, in favor of females, was significant only in regard to algebra (P< 0‐002) and the combined content (P<0001). A general conclusion of this study is that it is feasible—given certain boundary conditions—to develop a remedial mathematics course whose main instructional focus is on students working in small groups.

摘要:
In this paper, we indicate how the modern‐day billiard ball problem can be solved by the ancient Chinese concept of pairing. Thus, depending upon the dimensions of the billiard table (i.e. even or odd numbers), we demonstrate how one can determine precisely in which corner the billiard ball will end up assuming we neglect friction and any other considerations.

摘要:
A Moebius band is a familiar one‐sided figure. As the width of the strip increases to infinity some interesting properties are evident. The cylinder affords a simple frame for a ruled Moebius surface which can illustrate these properties, such as self intersection. This paper derives the equations necessary to plot points needed to construct this model enclosed in a cylinder.

摘要:
A simple mathematical method of balancing any chemical equation has been discussed with examples. It has also been shown mathematically that if the number of reactants and products in any chemical equation is at least two more than the total number of elements involved in the chemical equation, then there will be an infinite number of independent ways of balancing the equation, which is contrary to the law of chemical equation. It is now up to the chemists to decide experimentally or otherwise as to which of these equations is the valid chemical reaction and to explain the cause.
