摘要:
There is a growing interest in mathematical education in China. Recent articles have provided some information with respect to changes taking place in the PRC, but more recent developments are presently unfolding. It is the purpose of this article to bring to the attention of mathematics educators changes taking place with respect to mathematics curricula, examinations, olympiad contests, and other education related activities, such as productive labour obligations of students and teachers. The article reflects the general notion that the Chinese have made important science policy decisions which are serving to shape education practices, particularly in mathematics and science.

A simple enumeration problem from some research on problem solving is used to illustrate the contention that conjecture and proof have a central place in mathematics teaching. This aspect may be in some danger of neglect in the contemporary concern for content mastery, perhaps at the expense of other desirable ‘process’ skills.

摘要:
In the study of infinite series, the ratio test is a useful and easily applicable technique. However, as with all tests, it has its limitations and, for example, breaks down in the well known situation in which the ratio sequence converges to the value 1. When this occurs various procedures can be followed, some of which are discussed in [1]. In this note, some comments will be made on [1], and the usefulness of the gamma function in certain critical cases will also be discussed.

摘要:
This paper describes an attempt to teach the language of engineering to mathematics students. An outline is given of a twenty‐hour course which aims to improve the ability of mathematics graduates to fit into an engineering industry situation with as little difficulty as possible. Fluid flow in pipes and heat transfer are studied as the major topics to further this end.

摘要:
Movements between grades of a social process, for example an educational process, can be described by transition probabilities. In the educational system dropouts run counter to educational goals. Here consequences of dropouts on length of stay in school and the cost of education are examined for the two sexes. On application to Nigeria, the average length of stay is found to be small, 4‐1 years for boys and 3‐8 years for girls instead of the statutory six years. Completion costs are considerably lower because of high dropout rate. The average completion cost for a child in grade one is N 28‐7 for boys and N 26‐6 for girls instead of N 42‐00 in each case (N l.00 = £05).

摘要:
The normal distribution is the limit of the binomial distribution in certain circumstances. It is, therefore, a good idea to teach, first of all, the binomial distribution and then, by the limiting process, to arrive at the normal distribution. At first sight this seems to be perfectly plain, yet social science students experience difficulty: the limiting process is too theoretical for them. It has, however, been found than an appropriate model, like the one suggested here, overcomes this difficulty.

The object of this paper is to present a simple proof of the homotopic version of Cauchy's integral theorem which requires only the definition of integral over a piecewise continuously differentiable path, and which is constructive in the sense that it follows the deformation of one path onto another ‘across’ the homotopy.

It is shown that the similarity between the spherical Bessel function and modified spherical Bessel function can be obtained from elliptic trigonometry. It is then shown that the modified spherical Hankel transforms can be defined from elliptic trigonometry too.
