摘要:
Engineers and scientists wishing to perform harmonic analysis of waveforms may need to use discrete methods in preference to analytical methods partly because of the volume of algebra in analytical methods. Powerful computer algebra (in this study MAPLE) now offers a new mathematical environment which permits the investigation of analytical methods in harmonic analysis. MAPLE procedures are developed to investigate the harmonic structure of single‐phase and three‐phase waveforms of thyristor and triac circuits. The paper achieves three purposes: first it illustrates the use of a new mathematical tool available to the scientist and engineer; second it adds to a sparse, but growing, knowledge of the operation of computer algebra procedures; finally, it reveals the fine structure of the harmonic behaviour of these circuits.

摘要:
We present an interesting nonlinear equation originating from a geometrical problem. We show how it can be solved numerically, how algorithmic differentiation is useful, and how the problem can also be solved analytically using the computer algebra system Maple.

摘要:
Nonlinear systems could exhibit complicated behaviour. This is an interesting fact to be considered in different educational contexts. Our paper presents a repertory of nonlinear systems we selected to demonstrate oscillations and complex dynamics. We specify equations and values, so personal computers could be applied to solve the differential equations and to display graphically the solutions as appealing trajectories on the phase plane. The paper includes an appendix with some C code, as a programming template, and a set of references for more details. This material may be useful to teach nonlinear dynamics with the help of computers.

摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to describe how the Stella package, which is available for the Macintosh computer, can be used to enhance the understanding of the modelling and simulation process for undergraduate students. In addition some description will be given of larger practical and research applications of the Stella software. It is of course not possible to describe Stella in detail in a short paper but its main features will be highlighted and examples from a range of areas of application will be given. These examples will be used to illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of the package to allow its critical assessment.

摘要:
This article describes a research unit dealing with teacher‐student reaction and cooperation in solving problems dealing for the most part with cubic functions. Following the students’ work it presents an experience in a precollege level type of teaching aiming at familiarizing students with the process of mathematical research. In the exploratory process the students make the major mathematical contributions while the teacher plays two principal roles, namely that of a risk‐taker and a facilitator.
