摘要:
The pitch and central axis of the wrench equipollent to a general load system are obtained by means of a minimization process. Firstly the load system is reduced to a point force and a point couple and the critical points of the expression for the couple are found. Next it is shown that the equipollent system associated with these points is a wrench. Finally, the equipollent wrench is utilized in the derivation of some familiar results for distributed load systems.

With the great emphasis now being placed on the importance of ‘rigour’ in new mathematics programmes, many educators have been led to disparage intuition as the vitally important tool that it is in developing mathematical insights. Increasingly one sees evidence, even in technical schools, of pupils actually beingdiscouragedfrom arriving at mathematical perceptions through unorthodox (and uncontrollable!) channels of analogy involving considerabledivergentthinking or through consideration of physical models with which they are familiar.

摘要:
Logarithm tables and a slide rule can be constructed to one‐figure accuracy in a few moments of simple calculation by an individual. A group of students with the aid of tables of roots and powers can quickly achieve two‐digit accuracy. By using compound‐interest tables, three‐digit accuracy may be achieved without undue effort. No knowledge of infinite series or other advanced topics is necessary, and indeed experimental search for a way of multiplying by addition can be carried through successfully without the logarithm concept or as an introduction to it. The paper sketches some possible classroom procedures and gives examples of the devices that may be discovered by the student.

It is a well‐established fact that students learn better and retain longer the material to which they have been exposed in a meaningful way. A mathematical proof becomes more meaningful if an effort is made not only to point out the logical chain of assumptions and theorems that lead to the proof but also to explain the psychological background and motivation that led its author to take the particular steps he did.

In this paper we discuss three ways of introducing calculus all based on concepts which students would either already know or which can be introduced without much difficulty at this stage of their mathematical training. The aim of this paper is to persuade teachers of mathematics that topics in ‘higher mathematics’, specifically calculus, can and should be presented to students in terms of concepts with which they are familiar.
